Now hopefully Oklahoma City will hopefully see some 700, 800, and 900 footers to help build up more density while contributing to an overall taller skyline and giving some company to this longely anticipated project! This project definetly raises the bar for Oklahoma City and hopefully will lead the way!!!

So, this will be the tallest U/C in the US outside of NYC once it gets going, great for OKC. (unless Waterview or CS get going again)

Very cool news... This reminds me of when the BofA Corp Center was built in Charlotte in the early 90s. The city at the time had some decent size towers, then boom a nearly 900 foot sky scraper is up... OKC will now need some other towers to complement it.

The Real Oklahoma City...Tulsa Phil..Pittsburgh Breakdown

I think that "crown" only applieD to tallest building. Otherwise, OKC has always reigned over Oklahoma!

And will continue, even more quickly in the near future outpace Tulsa (becoming more of a Philly to Pittsburg analogy - both cities nice with lots going for them, but Philly is at a different level than Pitts; I see OKC going in that direction, quickly).
Someone who was born in Oklahoma and who has lived in California for at lease 30 or more years 'let' me"Clime' in on this discussion.

As a African American Tulsan we alway addressed Oklahoma City as the "CITY" supporting your point that Oklahoma City is larger than Tulsa ,
but never considered it as a city that dominated Tulsa...because Tulsa was
the 'Peacock"... , and Oklahoma City was the 'Ugly Duckling' that turned
into a "Swan"...Tulsa had all of the "World Class Venues" Philbrook Museum
and Gilcrease Museum....and the Topography of Tulsa Mountains..which were
really the tall hills in the Tulsa Metro Area..more "Beautiful "Lakes" than you
could shake a stick at and the "Arkansas River Park" and was Known as the
"Oil Capital Of The World" and the "Cleaniest City In American".

The 'Ugly Duckling" voted in the "MAPS" (Urban Renewal Project) in the 1990"S
at which time Oklahoma City became the "Beautiful White Swan" and Trumped
Tulsa the "Peacock"...Tulsa was created by "Rich Oil Barons' that gave it "Art
Deco" and "Skyscrapers Galore" ..."Philbrook and Gilcrease Museum" and all the
other "Whistlers and Bells"..that Tulsa enjoyed from being the 'Oil Capital Of
The World.

Philly is larger than Pittsburgh PA and has more output , but Pittsburgh has
a greater "Reputation" than Philly in the "Eye's" of most American and maybe
Tulsa will follow in it's footsteps 'Who's Knows"....

My Auntie and Uncle and Cousins live in Midwest City Oklahoma and when I was in Oklahoma on my vacation in 2000 and saw "The Bricktown Canal" I almost (Cried) I couldn't beleive that Oklahoma Built Something So Classy.
Then Oklahoma got the "New Orleans Oklahoma City Hornest" and I puffed
out my chest a little bit farther , then OKC got the Thunder and became a
Second Tier American City.

When The Devon Project Is Built I Might Almost Cry Again.....and I'm pulling
for Oklahoma City and I'm proud of Okalhoma City and Praying For It's Success
, but Tulsa will alway be My Best Loved City in Oklahoma if not the Greatest
and Pittsburgh PA will alway be the Majority Of American Most Loved City
if Not The So Called Number One City In PA.

I wish Devon would make a very nice website about this building. Detailing it's specs, materials, timeline, etc. It'd be a nice idea and give the people of OKC more info on what exactly this Devon HQ Tower will be like, encompass, and how long it'll take.

Well we should see some dirt movement in the next few months. Supposedly the project is on track and will be under budget with the reduction in materials costs. Every time I drive I-40, I imagine what it would look like. Oh and a little fun fact, if you don't already know, Devon's current building is all the way on the left in the fist and in the second picture....grey building, between the two white hotels...the smaller of the two greys. They're just currently spread out in 4 or 5 buildings downtown right now.

There are some images some folks put together on what some views would look like. No copyrights or anything, we just have fun on the OKC forum (OKCtalk.com).

From Douglas Park (east of downtown)

From the Myriad Gardens (southwest corner of downtown)

I didn't yet see this posted, even though it is from a month ago, but it contains a bit more information about the new skyscraper and it's construction. Here goes:

Devon Energy announces selection of general contractor for new headquarters in Downtown OKC
Heidi Rambo Centrella
5.27.2009

Devon Energy today announced it has officially selected a general contractor for the company’s planned 54-story headquarters building in Downtown Oklahoma City. For just this project, the general contractor will be named “Holder Flintco.”

Atlanta-based Holder Construction and Oklahoma-based Flintco Inc. entered into a joint venture on the project, with Holder being the majority partner in a 60-40 split.

“It’s important to have somebody that, on a national level, has done such impressive work with corporate headquarters,” said Devon spokesman Tony Thornton, citing the many Fortune 500 company headquarters Holder has seen to fruition. “And Flintco, obviously, has done extremely impressive work locally. They know Oklahoma. And they know subcontractors.

“It’s really important for us to have as many local subcontractors as is viable for the project,” he said. “Flintco knows those subcontractors much better than we do, so we really see that as a win-win for us.”

One advantage to getting Holder, Thornton said, is the company was extremely aggressive on the time schedule – more so than some of the other contenders. They saw the possibility of beginning construction on the deep foundation work of the tower to begin simultaneously with the site preparation work on the garage, he said.

“Previously, we had thought those would not necessarily begin simultaneously,” Thornton said. “The end result of that is it will displace people who are parking in the Gallaria garage for a much shorter period of time. And we’re thrilled about that, because that’s the last thing we want to do is displace people from their parking spots any longer than we have to.”

Thornton said given estimates are a maximum of 60 days that the garage will be unusable.

Oct. 1 is the projected start date, and estimated completion date is 2012 on the $750 million project – however, officials hope that price tag might be reduced a bit.

“I think once we get all the subcontractors lined up and once the general contractors get those people hired, we’ll have a better idea of where that $750 million figure fits,” Thornton said. “Our hope is still that, with the economy the way it is, we’re able to be a little bit off of that with the lowering cost of construction materials.”

howest, I agree and concur with your statements above. I think that is what I was trying to say with my analogy of Phila and Pitts. I think it really fits OKC and Tulsa.

I think since you are from Tulsa who now lives elsewhere, you completely understand in an objective manner what the deal was from Tulsa's prospective back in the day. However, as you know - there were most in your hometown who used Tulsa's 'appearance' to brag and be very pompass - while OKC's reaction usually was indifferent.

Today (and the last decade or so) it appears things have changed and OKC has definitely grown up in every way.

Not to take away from the Devon tower discussions - Sorry everyone.

Oklahoma City has grown up BIG TIME , and I'm pulling for the success of this project and the other projects that OKC has down the pike. Tulsa and Oklahoma/C are always willing to take a go at each other..but when
someone from out of state jumps in and I preceive that they never been to Oklahoma/C be it "right or wrong" I put in my two cents....I never seen two
instate cities compete against each other more than Tulsa and OklahomaCity
with the exception of San Francisco and Los Angeles CA...
But OKC did
it up this time and my hat is off .....

Yes, the project is still very much on track and preconstruction work continues on the site.

I wish I could find a website, I've looked everywhere. Maybe I'll just email them to construct one.

Yes, as future said - preconstruction is taking place and actual 'hard' construction is schedule for October; iirc. (only 2.5 months away )
