Holy crap. This thing is nowhere near topped out and it's already one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai.

You're also not getting an accurate idea of it's final girth from those last two photos, as the outer wall of the atrium is still slowly going in. This thing is going to be massive.

This building is amazing. Probably my favorite supertall being built anywhere. So jealous its not being constructed in NYC.

It wouldn't be built in NYC. AT least not exactly as is. Aside from the WTC complex, pretty much every building in New York City is built on a finite amount of space and has retail at the street level. That's what makes New York such a pedestrian friendly and inviting city. But I digress... yes, a 2,000 footer in NYC would be amazing.

Can't help it: I really don't find Shanghai's skyline appealing at all. The supertalls don't complement each other (IMO). They appear to be a pack of prima donnas, each screaming "LOOK AT ME!" Each building is beautiful but together I think they make a rather unappealing set.

imo that's what makes it unique. These three titans and the Oriental Pearl Tower define the Shanghai skyline.

While Jin Mao doesn't have a lot of retail right at the base, SWFC does. I'd be surprised if Shanghai Tower doesn't.

That's great, but I'm guessing (just guessing) that it's more like mall space as opposed to store fronts facing out to the street as you walk along the sidewalk. That's what I mean about New York being a great city to walk around. Anywhere you go there are stores and restaurants and people, and there's always more right across the street, as opposed to glass walls and cars and parking garages.

Anyway, this is a thread about Shanghai Tower, which I'm very excited to watch rise from the other side of the world.

What's even crazier is that I see at least 3 cranes in the background.China is going to have 3 600m by 2017.That's very good for skyscraper,I mean supertall fans in China.

Precisely my thoughts! Shanghai is like Dubai in that respect.

What's happening on the other bank of the river? In that huge panorama there seems to be two huge empty lots waiting for some project to commence...

Structurally this building is pretty revolutionary in my opinion. Core, mega-columns then much lighter steel to form the outer profile. I'd love have a crack at building this, although I guess I'd have to buy at least one more wheelbarrow.
