Also, just wondering, is a bridge from Manitoulin Island to Tobermory (Bruce Peninsula) theoretically possible?

Good question. Only went there for the first time three months ago. The thought popped up in my head too.

I thought of the Mackinac Bridge, but then noticed the distance would be much greater than that bridge.

That bridge would definitely increase the number of visitors to the Bruce and N. Ontario if people knew they could also cross onto Manitoulin and back easily. Or continue on up to N. Ontario.

Of course this would increase the pressure on the already sensitive Bruce Peninsula. After I came back I asked tonnes of friends and coworkers if any of them had been to Tobermory or Manitoulin and only two said yes. It's only 4 hours from TO to Toberbmory! Turns out lots of people aren't even aware what's there or haven't heard of it at all. I feel like this is intentional by public officials. Don't want too many people there or it will overload the environment.

Would be interesting to see that bridge. And from TO to Niagara.

Champlain is looking nice. Been to Montreal 10 times but have never crossed that one. Crossed all the ones north of there.

The pics kind of remind me of the causeway in the Florida Keys.

It doesn't look like it would be a major engineering challenge.

But what would the benefit be? There are 12,000 people on Manitoulin island and there isn't much in the way of time savings.

According to Google Maps, it takes about 20 minutes longer to get from Toronto to Sudbury as it does to get from Toronto to Tobermory, and you're doing that on a 4 lane divided highway.

No benefit economically. I'm sure he's just curiously wondering out loud.

It would make travel for SW Ontario people easier. And from a touristy POV, it's an alternate route with different scenery. One route up and the other route back.

This is my POV: There doesn't seem to be a lot of farm fields on Manitoulin Island or near Sudbury (at least not compared to SW and SC Ontario). If people there run out of food (i.e. grain), the bridge will allow trucks to send it over faster. That's really why I asked.

It would be a slightly more direct route to northern Ontario from Toronto. You would probably want to extend the 410 to it first though, it could meet 17 at Espanola.

Never going to happen of course.

I was more so thinking about 6 or 85, because both traverse many farming communities.

Wow, progressing fast.

(Still think they should keep the old one, continue maintain it, restricting it to light vehicles only. It's already there anyway, and there's savings in avoiding the demo costs.)

They invested hundreds of millions in support trusts underneath the bridge for it not to fall. It would need hundreds of millions more just to have it safe for 1-2 additional years. It's badly damaged and unsalvgeable.
