What can I say, not only do I not have a rail system to work with, we may never within my lifetime. It's hard to schematically organize the highways here, so I gave up trying, and I'm not sure how I like the result. The legend was fun to do. I might try a fantasy rail map again sometime.

This is a geographically accurate map of the city (made entirely by myself), the transit routes and stations are superimposed on a map of population density by land use zone. (I also made a map laying out land use zones.)
the map is geographically accurate, but the urban area map is invented right? Because in the real city, the most dense part is the east area, which on your map corresponds to the top of the image.

The geography and road network and waterways (with the exception of the airport area, which is actually connected to the mainland but I severed; and the northwest part is actually a river, not an sea coast) are all accurate (I traced them), but as for what class some roads are and where the highest concentrations of people are, I have taken complete liberty. Vitoria (the island) only has about 350,000 people (iirc), my map has about 750,000. I liked the layout of Jardim de Penha so I chose that as the city centre. Vitoria proper (Centro) is a satellite downtown area, I think I imagined that as where the government was located while Jardim de Penha (which would have a built-form like central Paris) and Barro Vermelho (with a built form like downtown Vancouver) were business/residential mixed use area. I think I stuck a lot of institutional stuff in Bento Ferreira as well. The university for that city is in the same place as UFES but on my map it would be much more dense and built up.

I've got some other maps if you want to see them.

if you take your map alone it makes sense to have the downtown in that area I guess... but in the real world you have Vila Velha, which is bigger than Vitoria, just across the bridge from somewhere near the end of your red line road (upper right of the picture), thats why downtown is there.

Vitória on foreground, Vila Velha on background

Vitória on background

Vila Velha on background

Vitória, near the connection with the bridge (this area corresponds to the top most right of your map)

(above pics found on this thread http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=907898)

Vila Velha left, Vitória right

I was wondering what the giant building was. In my map, this place is many miles from the nearest other inhabited land.

Here is the Roads/water layer if you're interested.

Updated my fantasy Twin Cities transit system, and also updated the PDF file in the process.

Here's a medium-resolution version:

Great colour scheme huh? I think more systems should use the dark background maps like we have in Canada. They look very sleek.

To get the stops to appear better, try using a black stroke instead of a coloured circle on a black circle like it looks like you're doing. Some look a little misaligned.

This is a map I produced for a transit advocacy group in the DC suburbs. It is their vision for better transit in Montgomery County, MD, but my map:

... And here's one I produced for the Norfolk area, based on my own ideas:

Good job, and pretty much spot on. One (real life) extension that is being mentioned is from Berkley Avenue to the Greenbriar area of Chesapeake, perhaps extending as far west as Battlefield Boulevard.

Another (real life) idea floating around is to have an electric trolley from DT Norfolk heading north along Granby Street, with stops at the Virginia Zoo, Lafayette, Thole, East Little Creek Road (Wards Corner area), and on to Ocean View.

Have you thought about a map for the Peninsula? There are some real life ideas there, too, most of which would use of the existing CSX trackage and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor route. (That's right folks - contrary to popular belief the NEC doesn't end at DC).

Of course, the ultimate goal is to have a Peninsula and Southside connection via a third Hampton Roads crossing. (For those that are interested, the third bridge-tunnel crossing has proposed, off and on, high-speed, light rail, and bus/tractor trailer "lanes" as well, though the cost is likely prohibitive.)

I invented the term "hybrid binary hub-and-spoke" to describe this:

A very simple representation of our city bus routes. The numbers in squares are transfer points and how often a bus gets there during peak hours, the thick lines are "high frequency" (15 minute!) bus routes.

Which is your neighbourhood? I am contemplating a redesign.

The coloured lines are subway routes, the northern and southern sections would possible be elevated. My design theory was to replace the current primary bus lines with rail ones. The rails are full-gauge high speed rail lines to the suburbs.

arkhitektor: Yours is definitely better, but if it were me, I'd color the purple line light gray instead, both to indicate that it's a different level of service and also so it doesn't clutter the map so much. That one line makes the rest harder to understand at a glance.

These maps are just amazing!

What program software do you use to create these? Photoshop, Inkscape?
