Generation Park adds Courtyard by Marriott as 1st hotel
By Katherine Feser
May 8, 2018

A Courtyard by Marriott hotel is going up in Generation Park, a master-planned business park of McCord Development in northeast Houston.

Houston-based McCord announced the groundbreaking of the 5-story, 144 room hotel, which will be the first hotel in the Redemption Square lifestyle and entertainment center. Completion is targeted for 2019.

Hotel Development Services, which purchased a one-acre site in Redemption Square, is developing the hotel, its first in Texas. It will have more than 2,000 square feet of meeting space, a business center, 24-hour market, fitness center, outdoor pool, casual workspaces and a bistro.

American Hospitality Management will oversee the day-to-day construction and management of the property for Hotel Development Services.

"We continue to bring amenities to our mixed-use district, Redemption Square, that will benefit both the business at Generation Park and the Lake Houston communities that surround it," McCord Development president Ryan McCord said in an announcement.

Houston’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority picks firm for Bagby Street redesign

By Olivia Pulsinelli – Senior web editor, Houston Business Journal
May 8, 2018, 4:12pm CDT Updated May 9, 2018, 8:45am CDT

Another makeover project in downtown Houston just took a step forward.

The Downtown Redevelopment Authority announced in a May 8 press release that civil engineering firm Jones|Carter will lead the project to redesign the Bagby Street Corridor.

Bagby, one of downtown Houston’s few two-way streets, connects the Theater District and key civic institutions such as City Hall, Houston Public Library’s central building and the Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park. It also runs between nine parks, among other public attractions, the release notes.

The street currently is between four and six lanes wide, but the redesign will reduce it to between three and four vehicular lanes while adding wider pedestrian walkways, a bicycle lane, beautification elements and signature lighting, per the release. The corridor’s storm sewer system also will be updated to meet current requirements and help drainage to reduce ponding.

“Mayor Turner has tasked us with enhancing and bringing new energy to the west side of downtown,” Bob Eury, DRA president, said in the release. “We see great potential in transforming Bagby Street into a safe place for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles while linking the diverse offerings along the corridor.”

The $22 million project kicked off in July 2017 with awarding a traffic impact analysis and preliminary engineering design to Traffic Engineers Inc.; Lockwood, Andrews & Newman Inc.; SWA Group; and C.N. Joehl Urban Forest Inc., per the release. The final report was completed in April. Phase two began in March with a request for qualifications for an engineering and design consultant team. The project is expected to last through June 2021, with design taking one year and construction taking two.

Houston icons to put a ring on it at Hall of Fame groundbreaking

Melanie Hauser

May 11, 2018 Updated: May 11, 2018 10:30am

Earl Campbell is counting down the days.

Every morning. Same smile. Same headshake. Same thought. Maybe a word changed here or there, but Christian Campbell knows what's coming.

His dad wants to be able to slip that size 20 Houston Sports Hall of Fame ring onto his finger next month. The problem? The gnarled knuckle that carried so many footballs and took so many beatings over his Hall of Fame career.

"I just hope,'' Campbell says, "I can get it over that knuckle.''

No one may be more excited for June 4 to get here than the former Houston Oiler and Texas Longhorn legend.

Just after 3 p.m on June 4, Houston's Legendary 34s -- Campbell, Nolan Ryan and Hakeem Olajuwon -- will all slip on their rings at the groundbreaking ceremony downtown for phase one of the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.
As for the project itself...

Quote:
The groundbreaking signifies phase one of the project --a Walk of Fame stretching from the House of Blues through the GreenStreet Promenade. Each inductee will be honored with a plaque.

Future phases call for multiple state-of-the-art LED video displays and interactive experiences.

The project will culminate in the Hall of Fame, which would be housed in an actual interior space.

Renowned Houston sports artist Opie Otterstad's 8-foot paintings of Campbell, Olajuwon and Ryan, which were unveiled at the Houston Sports Awards, will be the first exhibit to hang in the Hall of Fame.

Upper Kirby luxury-branded condos break ground behind schedule

By Fauzeya Rahman – Reporter, Houston Business Journal
May 15, 2018, 9:30am CDT

The team behind the Giorgetti, the luxury condominium project named after a high-end Italian furniture maker, broke ground May 15 on the 32-unit project set to open by the end of 2019. This will be the first branded condo project for the 120-year-old Italian design company.

Along with Georgia-based developer Stolz Partners, the team behind the Giorgetti includes architect and landscape architect Houston-based Mirador Group and contractor Houston-based E.E. Reed Construction LP. Houston-based Sudhoff Cos. is handling sales and marketing. Prosperity Bank provided a partial construction loan. The team originally planned to break ground in March, but permitting delays pushed the timeline back, said Will Stolz, founder and owner of Stolz Partners.

The seven-story condominium off Kirby Street and Steel Street is more than 50 percent sold and will include 32 units ranging from 2,700 square feet to 6,800-square-foot penthouses, priced between $1.4 million and $3.4 million.

Stages Repertory Theatre breaks ground on new campus named for prominent Houstonians

By Olivia Pulsinelli – Senior web editor, Houston Business Journal
May 16, 2018, 8:05am CDT Updated May 16, 2018, 10:09am CDT

Stages Repertory Theatre held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 15 for its new 66,850-square-foot campus a block south of its current Allen Parkway location.

The three-theater campus, at 800 Rosine St., is expected to open to during the 2019-2020 season. It will be called The Gordy, named in honor of a $5 million matching grant from local philanthropists Glenda and Russell Gordy, an oil and real estate magnate. The Gordys’ matching grant, announced in December, is one of the largest individual gifts in the history of Houston’s performing arts community, according to a May 15 press release.

So far, the organization’s “Staging Our Future: A Transformational Campaign for Stages” campaign has raised $29.5 million toward its $32 million goal, per the release. In addition to the Gordys’ grant, other major contributions have come from The Sterling-Turner Foundation and the Winston and Reckling families, Houston Endowment Inc., The Brown Foundation, The Wortham Foundation and Stages’ board of directors.

Houston: The 9-Story Luxury Revere in River Oaks Gets its Canopy

Posted: 5-17-2018

by Adolfo Pesquera

Houston (Harris County) – Pelican Builders obtained a zero-foot building line for a fancy metal canopy that will serve as shelter to the main entrance for The Revere at River Oaks, a nine-story condominium tower planned to reach the construction phase this summer.

BGE Inc., acting as representative for the developer, secured the variance last week from the planning commission. The tower will be at the southeast corner of Welch Street and Revere Street on a lot where an older two-story structure was recently removed.

Pelican Builders Inc. plans a 30-unit condominium community and the canopy will extend 15 feet-4 inches from the building to the curb at a height of 11 feet-4 inches.

The condo tower will have a maximum height of 120 feet, with a top finish floor at 96 feet up.

UH's basketball arena renovations to be completed in December

By Natalie Harms – Print associate editor, Houston Business Journal
May 24, 2018, 5:00pm CDT

The University of Houston is in the midst of renovating its 50-year-old Hofheinz Pavilion and transforming it into the Fertitta Center. The total $60 million redevelopment project is expected to be completed by the first week in December, according to a UH spokesperson.

New York-based Turner Construction, No. 9 on the 2018 Largest Houston-Area Commercial Contractors List with $220 million in local billings in 2017, is the general contractor on the project.

Season tickets for the 2018-19 season start at $175, UH previously announced.

The renovation plans include both exterior and interior work. Inside, the ceiling will be raised to 30 feet at the bowl and concourse levels — a feature that’s costing about $5 million and four months of construction due to the removal of asbestos-containing materials, according to UH.

The project also is reconfiguring the seating to improve viewing. There will be two large club areas, updated technology and AV equipment, new court, new scoreboard, expanded restroom facilities and new food service and retail venues. Other aspects of the facility such as offices and locker rooms will be updated as needed. When completed, seating capacity is being slightly reduced from Hofheinz’s 8,479 seats. A projected final seat count was not provided.

The university’s Guy V. Lewis Basketball Center — a $25 million, 53,000-square-foot building that opened in 2016 next door to the arena — will be accessible through a new tunnel connection.
