They have changed the Dollarton Hwy southbound on-ramp to go over Main Street and converge with the Main St. on ramp into the third lane of the bridge. They will also use metering and keep the connection from Phibbs Exchange.

This is great because it removes that slow yield merge. That alone should make a massive difference.

Not a fan of the design of Mt. Seymour Hwy and Kieth, but I never have been.

Yes, I'd prefer to see the new Keith Road overpass further north, as in the 2016 proposals, in order to straighten the path to Mount Seymour Parkway. That would be better than the existing tight curve around the new towers to Fern Street. I'd also like to see changes to the eastbound on-ramp at that interchange as I've never liked the tight turn from westbound on Fern to eastbound on Highway 1.

The on-ramp could perhaps be an overpass from the new collector road on the north side of the highway, which would be designed in a way to keep the traffic heading for the westbound and eastbound highway on-ramps on the left side of that road and the exiting traffic for Mountain Highway on the right. (That road could have four lanes: leftmost rising to curve over the highway and become the eastbound on-ramp, then the westbound on-ramp, then a lane from the intersection through to Mountain, and finally an underpass from the westbound highway rising to merge into the collector.

Seeing it from that perspective you get a sense of how puny and pathetic 4 lane highway 1 is.

That's something i hadn't noticed about this project. Are they really installing a brand new overpass without any room to allow expansion of Highway 1? (only room for 4 lanes under)

It looks like it will give Hwy 1 room for 6 lanes + shoulder.

I'll try to take a photo next time I pass by

There looks like a large amount of room for expansion

That's good. I hadn't driven by there in a while and the previous post sounded like they had underbuilt it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Îs there no formal plan document clearly outlining how many lanes wide the road will be? Surely there must be a plan somewhere. I searched the web but could not find it. Anyone else?

All the necessary info can be found on the project's website:
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/t...n-improvements

Initial day will see the same configuration as today, 2 lanes southbound and 2 lanes + 1 climbing lane northbound.

From pictures on the ministry's flickr it looks easliy expandable to 3 lanes each way and possible 4 if shoulders are removed.

Arent' they putting in Collector/Express Lanes in here? I guess that wouldn't affect the cut, but the entire Lower Lynn section, isn't that being turned into a C/E system?

There's only one additional westbound lane from the collector road. There still only seems to be two lanes east at that overpass.

You can see it in this PDF:

Thanks!

I sure hope that whoever's making the signage doesn't use this video as a template. The sign at 0:42 seconds says you need to keep right for Whistler, and 12 seconds later you need to be in the leftmost lane to get there.

Supposedly the project is about 9 months behind schedule:

https://www.nsnews.com/news/north-va...ule-1.23507079

Quote:
“Due to the addition of municipal work by the contractor and restricted activities during the winter months for the protection of Keith Creek, the Mountain Highway interchange completion has been moved to spring 2019 (likely in June),” a statement from the ministry read. “The extra work entails 200 metres of sewer line replacement, repaving and line marking on Mountain Highway starting at Arborlynn Drive.”

There is some dispute though as to the exact cause of the delays.
It seems like the contract has over-extended himself such that they haven't been able to complete some necessary jobs before winters arrival. Maybe the contractor should bear the cost of the 9 month delay?

If it's in the contract, you can bet the government is looking at cost recovery. They call that a "liquidated damages" clause.
