A few pictures from a walk around town this afternoon. I love pictures angled upward toward high skylines but haven't been able to do that since my last trip to Boston, so... **** it. Tried a poor man's version here.

Me too. In my opinion one of the comparatively prominent things about Montreal is that the density lends itself to sense of urban intimacy that only New York and Quebec City really match. I figure if I were forced to choose the images that I think really "get" Montreal, I'd go with these ones:

I strongly encourage SSPers out there who've never been to Montreal to go. Especially in the summer.

Because it's awesome.

It's so strange how things can become background noise. I used to hate that white building on the left of the from-citadel view. It was the main focus, in my impression, and I didn't like it. Now, I hardly even notice it, and a nice building is the focus.

Well I still hate it, but then again, i don't consider Nova Centre to be a nice pair of buildings.

I never liked the white tiered building either. It does look better now, which is funny because when the new buildings were proposed there was a bunch of opposition based around the idea that they'd detract from the view.

The white building was singled out in a report on heritage preservation as an example of poor "sympathetic" design. It was meant to mimic the colours of the town clock, but that strategy made the older building stand out less. In the same way, some of the red brick recreations cheapen the older buildings nearby. I like the newer glass buildings more, although they can be sterile and monotonous when there are too many of them.

I am not sure what to make of the Nova Centre since it isn't finished. The glass cladding looks good. There is a covered street in the middle of the complex; hopefully that will be an inviting space when the development is finished. I feel like the most important measure of success will be how well the development integrates into the surrounding streetscapes. Hopefully it won't end up functioning like a giant bunker.
