Weird, then the CBC is fucking up as well. This morning it had Germany at #1 with the 5 Golds.

As far back as I can remember CBC has always used total medals over golds as the sort order. I think that harkens back to the days (especially the Summer Olympics) when Canada would rarely win gold and we'd have a medal count of something like 2-4-13. Rio comes to mind where we were 20th in the gold ranking method, but 10th in the overall total medal count.

I don't remember it like that, it's been total all week and for as long as I can remember as the way we do it.

I'm watching the curling (I know the result) wondering if the Swiss guy is gonna have a heart attack.

CBC had the medal table sorted correctly before Canada got any medals and them promptly switched to total medals once Canada started getting some. It's frustrating beyond belief. Total medals is not the proper ranking system and it should be ranked by G/S/B. Medal table is supposed to reflect events won.

Here's the medal table provided by the IOC.

If Canada was 0-0-10 and Norway was 9-0-0, do you think Canada would be doing better? As a ranking mechanism.

If that was the sole ranking mechanism then why bother having silver and bronze medals?

The U.S likes to go by number because in most Olympics they win the most overall so this way they can almost always claim to be #1.
Not in this universe. The Canadian Olympic Committee has always ranked by total medals and media outlets have followed suit. It was a big thing that we didn't win the total medal count in Vancouver.

A better method is probably points based with G=5 S=3 and B=1

But I completely agree that being in the top three in the world at anything is a seriously significant accomplishment.

Now it feels like the Olympics around here. I can't fault either system. Both are familiar to me.

I've always though a gold should be worth 3 points, a silver 2 and a bronze 1!

Is everyone happy with G as the sort order now that the US is ahead of us.

There's no proper ranking system. IOC medal rankings are unofficial.

A couple of upsets in Men's hockey this morning.
Slovakia beat (not)Russia 3-2.
Slovenia came back from 2-0 down to beat the US in OT.

^I'm not sure anything is going to really be an upset. Outside of maybe Sweden I think it is going to be so close in every game. Whoever has the best goaltender that day is going to win. Not what the usual powerhouses want, but it's going to be chaotic and interesting. Although Sweden lost to Switzerland so I'd say all bets are off on anything.

That would have been in the women's tournament which is much less of an upset.

Whoops.

I am not liking the layout of the Olympic site. It mushes the games together in some places and not others. When I click on hockey at the top and not on the bottom menu I go to the summer olympics field hockey. That was super confusing. Why is it just hockey and not Ice Hockey and Field Hockey?
