William Watson, writing in yesterday's National Post, considers the math on tax credits given to to foreign film-makers:

"Phasing out $470-million in the various federal and provincial tax credits we give to foreign film-makers — only PEI and the Northwest Territories don’t have them — might take a while. But you could start today. Not only would our governments’ fiscal positions improve as a result, we’d stop inflicting net economic harm on ourselves.

That’s the message of a careful cost-benefit analysis of film subsidies just published in the journal by John Lester at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. Cost-benefit analysis is always sensitive to the assumptions used but Lester’s baseline estimate is that the tax credits to foreign film-makers provide $58-million of benefits at a total economic cost of $510.8-million. When the baseline is so unfavourable, you’d have to more than tweak the assumptions — you’d have to manhandle them — to produce a net benefit....

The bottom line? The bottom line is that the bottom line is terrible for Canada. The net economic “benefit” in 2010 was negative $452.8-million. Spending $470-million in tax credits inflicts net damage of $450-million on our economy."

A forthcoming feature film entitled Hacker will be filming exterior scenes along the south leg of King downtown on Saturday, November 30 from 6am to 6pm. South leg of King will be closed between John and Hughson (burrito lockdown?) and there will be intermittent traffic stoppages at King & John. The area in front of the Connaught will be reserved for production vehicles starting Friday, November 29 at 10pm.

There will be squibs.

Synopsis: "A young immigrant kid, ALEX DANYLIUK, gets tied up with an online crime organization known as DarkWeb. He looks to earn easy money since his parents suffer from financial trouble and risk losing their home. Alex quickly moves up the ranks of DarkWeb and partners up with a streetwise haggler, SYE, and another hacker, KIRA. His operations bring in more money, but his out-of-the-box approach causes other members of DarkWeb to turn against him out of jealousy. But throughout all of this, ALEX is on the path to becoming a member of the inner circle, together with the Don of the crime family, ZED."

Quality.

Missed earlier word of this. Seems like a reasonably stacked production.

Movie shooting in Hamilton looking for extras
(Flamborough Review, Mar 21 2014)

Producers are looking for extras for a movie that they are planning to shoot in the Hamilton area in April.

The film – Crimson Peak – will be directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) and stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), Tom Hiddleston (Thor), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim).

Described as a “haunting gothic horror story,” the film is a period piece set in the early 1900s.

According to a press release, the movie “tells the story of a young aspiring author (Wasikowska) who, in the aftermath of a family tragedy, is torn between love for her childhood friend (Hunnam) and the temptation of a mysterious outsider (Hiddleston).

“Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to rural England to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers.”

The film will be released Fri., Oct. 16, 2015.

Producer Callum Greene said the filmmakers scouted all over Ontario and Hamilton provided three distinct locations to re-create a 1900s environment.

“The City of Hamilton and the city’s businesses and people have been incredibly supportive of the project, as we hear they are with most films and TV shows, so it was an easy decision,” he said. “We can’t wait to begin our work there.”

Eighty extras will be required for filming and while they must be 18-and-over, a range of ages from 18-85 will be required.

Those interested will need to be available for one to three weekdays during the month of April and a typical shoot day is 12-16 hours.

To apply email a current picture and clear picture of yourself to extrascastinghamilton@gmail.com. The photo should be taken straight on with no smile in daylight or natural light.

When applying, women should list their height, weight, bust, waist hips, dress and shoes size, while men should list their height, weight, chest, waist, inseam, neck and shoe size.

As well, men should have naturally coloured hair, a minimum 1.5 inches long, no longer than jaw length, and no visible tattoos. If they have facial hair, those applying should be prepared to have it changed or removed, although the film does need quite a few men with beards.

Women should not have over-tweezed eyebrows, no nail polish, visible tattoos, no piercings and naturally coloured hair that is at least shoulder length.

According to CBC Hamilton, shooting starts April 10 and one of the locations will be Dundurn National Historic Site.

The movie trailer is out for the Poltergeist remake. Interior shots of the house were filmed in Toronto, but the exterior shots were filmed in Hamilton at 1295 Upper Paradise Road.

Oooooooo the suburbs.... scary stuff

Looks like they added some greenery.

I really wish they'd NOT remake older films as much as they seem to do now. The original Poltergeist is a classic.

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pans Labyrinth) is in town shooting a new film it looks like.

He has excitedly been tweeing about Hamilton and giving shout outs to lots of local restaurants.

The Hulu original series The Handmaid's Tale based on Margaret Atwood's novel has been filming in Hamilton over the past few months, in the Durand/Kirkendall South Neighbourhoods.

They've been using the old church at Charlton/Caroline for many scenes. It's been fun watching the extras run around in costume!

Here's a link to the teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dre0...b_channel=Hulu

Lights … camera … Kenilworth? “Major blockbuster” crew scouts Hamilton

https://www.thespec.com/living-story...outs-hamilton/

A "major, blockbuster-type production" is sniffing around Hamilton for locations for an upcoming shoot — and it's promising to be explosive.

Coun. Sam Merulla said Tuesday that a large production has chosen the city as the backdrop of its upcoming shoot.

The exact nature of the production is still top-secret — not even Merulla has been given the full details — but the shoot will require a full shutdown of Kenilworth Avenue between Britannia and Barton streets for filming that will include pyrotechnics and explosives.

Guillermo del Toro says he’d like his own film studio in Hamilton
Mexican director sings praises of Toronto and the Hammer at TIFF news conference for The Shape of Water.

https://www.thestar.com/entertainmen...-hamilton.html

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro says he loves Hamilton so much he’d like to set up his own studio in the southern Ontario city.
....

“I love Hamilton, I love it. It has some of the greatest stores, book stores, restaurants. It’s really a transforming city,” del Toro told a TIFF news conference Monday.

“But also what I love is the energy and I think the city is incredibly generous with filmmakers. It really is and it makes a huge difference. If I have it my way, I’ll have a studio there soon when I recuperate. I love the city.”
