helin & co architects: villa krona

positioned on a remote island in the gullkrona archipelago, finland, the 'villa krona', a single family residence designed by helsinki-based practice helin & co architects has been nominated by the world architecture festival for an award in this year's house category. perched high upon a cliff overlooking the baltic sea, this segmented dwelling and veranda gradually unfolds to reveal unobstructed vistas of the sunrise and sunset along with changing weather of the seasons. autumn storms send thrashing waves towards the structure allowing them to gradually freeze within view from the interior. immersed in nature, inhabitants are provided with a dynamic retreat from monotonous environments.

but the furniture is too out, too square to fit the design, not integrated to it, pity.

comfort-architecten: wohnhaus pircher, planit C

italian practice comfort-architecten has completed 'wohnhaus pircher, planit C', a single family residence positioned amidst a scenic landscape near the italian-austrian border in toblach, italy. south-facing terraces and promenades line the roof to offer panoramic vistas of the mountains blanketed with trees. staggered volumes arranged around a central courtyard allow natural daylight to permeate into the sub-grade wellness and fitness spaces. the entry floor contains a work room and a living area and the kitchen and dining room are elevated, accessed by a stair which wraps around the glass encased open-air atrium.

No love for Falling Water?!?!?! What re you guys, a bunch of urban brutalists or something? Fine, I'll take it thank you very much lol.

It's the best home of all time. Built in the THIRTIES, ok? WWII hadn't even happened yet. Of course it looks dated...Frank Lloyd Wright inspired all the other "modern" stuff that's been posted in this thread, and it was 70-80 years ahead of its time.

A typical, trashy McMansion built by people with new money who wish they had the class to buy a real Victorian or Colonial but they're so vapid that they're scared it would be "haunted". This picture could be used to describe everything that's wrong with America in microcosm. I couldn't hate this home more. The homeowners should be ashamed.

No character. No imagination. No class.

I prefer that house to most of those contemporary, minimalist boxes that look like mini-college libraries. That's just the gaudy in me I s'ppose.

I thought everyone on here knew about that one (well I do anyway) & there are already hundreds of books out about it so that's why I post other stuff. You can post your favourite shots of it if you want.

tabanlioglu architects: istinye residence

turkish practice tabanlioglu architects have designed 'istinye residence', a residential block comprised of three buildings along the bosporus river in istanbul, turkey. formally reminiscent of wings, butterfly roofs at varied orientations hover above the tree line opening views to the encompassing greenery and welcoming abundant daylight inside. a transparent facade in conjunction with the interior's vaulted ceilings dissolve the boundary between the internal and external environments.

Yet if you were handed the title and keys to the front door you'd probably be all over it . . . . I don't disagree with what you're saying, however I've seen tackier homes.

Combining Nature With Comfort: Under Pohutukawa Residence

The mesmerizing Under Pohutukawa Residence was designed by Auckland-based studio Herbst Architects and is a two story beach house located in northern New Zealand. Its design was built in strong connection to the local landscape, composed of impressive Pohutukawa trees, which occupy 90%of the site’s area. The house is spectacular, both inside and out, mixing nature with comfort in a tasteful and highly inspiring fashion. Under Pohutukawa was distinguished with the NZIA Auckland architecture award 2011, with the following arguments from the jury:

Why couldn't I have been born rich? Why cruel world?

Some really amazing homes in this thread. That last one especially.

TYPICAL McMansion?!? Whoa buddy, since when is a 39,000+ sq ft house typical? lol.

I have no reason to defend that house I posted but how can you say it has no design? It is breathtaking in person and has marble and materials imported all over the world for its design. How can you say $20 million is McMansion?

http://homesoftherich.net/2010/08/a-...-at-5.55.07-pm

A McMansion is maybe about 4,000-6,000 sq ft with impressive curb appeal but cheapness coming through such as vinyl all over it.
Here is a an example:

http://shophomesinbuckscounty.com/?attachment_id=202

Actually, here is a picture I took in August in Naples, Florida standing next to a house for sale for $22 million. It had some neat features but it blended in WAY more boringly with it's surrounding lesser sized but all similar stucco neighbors:

So what is the consensus on where many of the most innovative homes in the world are being built?
I would say Brazil has a strong showing; Japan has a ton of interesting stuff; Scandinavia; And the US; Europe has probably more innovative designs total just because of the massive 700+ million population.
