The California site is rumored to be on the Salton Sea, next to a lithium brine extraction plant opening up, and with access to existing rail freight lines.

I would hope that where ever Tesla intends to build any factory in the future they use it as leverage to force that state to remove restrictions that are cropping up across the US. Auto dealership lobby groups are getting laws past that cars canot be sold directly to consumers from the manufacturer but must go through a dealership. Its time for Tesla to throw its weight around some.

Congratulations to Reno. This will create a lot of good jobs for the region. The countdown begins to when I can afford my new Tesla!

Could this be renamed to:

RENO | Tesla Gigafactory

Its outside of Reno, but the city most associated with it. Plus, it looks neater.

Reno nevada was the site chosen for it.

Tesla is buying up huge chunks of Nevada
Benjamin Zhang
Jul. 15, 2015, 4:42 PM

Recently, Tesla tripled the amount of land the factory will cover, The Wall Street Journal's Mike Ramsey reported.
The Palo Alto-based automaker originally purchased roughly 1,000 acres of land — in 2014 — outside of Reno, Nevada to construct its new battery factory.

According to the Journal, Tesla purchased another 2,000 acres of land near the original plot — effectively tripling Tesla's land holdings.

Panasonic ups ante in Tesla gigafactory investment

Published: Jan 7, 2016 1:42 p.m. ET
By Mike Ramsey

LAS VEGAS-- Panasonic Corp. President Kazuhiro Tsuga said the company will spend up to $1.6 billion on an advanced battery factory with electric-car maker Tesla Motors Inc., an investment it hopes to cement its future in automotive electronics.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant and Tesla are jointly funding an up to $5 billion battery plant in Nevada. Panasonic hasn't previously disclosed the full size of its investment. It will be several years before that factory is humming at full steam, and for Panasonic the wait will be costly because its lithium-ion battery business has struggled to make money.
