I'm leaning towards the low 800 000's but I can see the population getting up to 840-850k if there is a bit more growth in the future

Out of curiosity, as you are an outsider, what are you basing your lower-end predictions on?

I'm amazed that net migration losses have doubled in the last few years.
I thought with other provincial economies tanking it would have been the opposite.

Manitoba has lost the majority of people to Alberta, and the early returns suggest 2016 will be the year that finally starts to reverse itself. Besides, the oil bust only started at the end of 2014. Give it time.

Hopefully the net loss of people to BC consists of mostly seniors for retirement. The number of Albertans fleeing Alberta continues.

I would be surprised if it was just through retirement. I see a lot of the immigration numbers through my job and a lot of young people are heading out to BC for work. Even in my small profession, the number of professionals I see leaving for BC easily outpaces what we have coming in. Although, I will say that I rarely fill out endorsement forms to go to Alberta.

BC's economy has been improving, so I guess I should not be surprised, but with the cost of living...

seems like a lot of people around my age want to go to BC for the mountains and sea, but they usually end up coming back within a few years because it's too expensive if you're in your 20s, and most don't have family or friends out there.

I know of some people my age, millennial types (I know..), who've moved to BC and returned after a couple years once the luster wears off. One couple went for the mountain hiking, as was mentioned, and have since returned. Others have stayed for ~5 years and are still there.

Same could be said about people I know who've moved to Toronto. Some go for a while and come back; some have stayed.

Just thinking about this now, most of the people who have stayed away have more professional careers as opposed to trades or other career paths. Which is of course worse for Manitoba, as the higher paid jobs are staying away.

Winnipeg, 2% of Canada.

Tor, Mtl and Van, 50% of Canada.

Wow.

Those figures are out of date.
Manitoba had 1.31 million back in summer of 2016.
Winnipeg was already 802.000 + at that time.

The figures are from the Canadian census which was filled out in the spring of 2016.

So either the numbers you're quoting from the summer of 2016 are completely inaccurate, or Winnipeg grew by 3% in a matter of months. At that rate we'll hit a million people in a couple of years.

Okay, so city proper is at 705k, and Winnipeg CMA is at 778.5k. I found the table on the statcan website on how Winnipeg fared well with other cities in the city proper population table, but I can't find the CMA numbers on the statcan website. Anybody got a link?

This is great, by the way. Manitoba in total gained about 70,000 people since 2011.
