The 1' gaps between buildings always creep me out. Check out the one between Omni and Ritz. Obviously the gap will be covered up

What's the rationale behind this? Plenty of buildings have a party wall, or directly abut each other. Is it Chicago Building Code, or is it some more complicated engineering reason?

That gap really is ridiculous - I would hate to be a guest at the Omni hotel in one of those rooms. It just goes to show that everything about this building, from initial space planning all the way through the final design was seemingly an afterthought on the part of the developer, architect, etc. Although I'm happy to see another high-rise going up, and as much as I try to like this building I just can't (I wonder what it would have been like to just tilt the floor plan 45 degrees to the NW, eliminating the need to block that corner of the hotel and possibly with a more contemporary design...oh well).

Code allows for a party wall condition. My assumption is I think it has to do with the cladding. It's precast I believe along that wall, so it will extend out about a foot probably above the top of the Omni parapet wall, and they couldn't intrude on their airspace. There won't likely be any cladding on the lower level in that gap. Just CMU block infill. The gap is probably a bit wider than we see because the Omni parapet wrapped up overtop of the old party wall of the neighboring buildings.

Some of those floor levels look awfully squat in the middle. Those must be for parking, no?

I used the vray plugin for sketchup. It can make some photorealistic renders when you make an effort, though it doesn't always run very stable. Vray for 3DS Maxis way better. But for the sake of the diagram, it only took me 10 minutes to make and upload. It's a good tool

Yes most are for parking, but the floors are not as short as they appear. I would suspect the concrete beams are simply thicker (taller) at the perimeter in some places, for partial shear-wall structural purposes.

In particular, floors 5 and 6 on the Erie Street face might be using this in order to compensate for the extra-tall opening that you can see on floor 7. The oversized opening might be needed either for carrying in extra-large equipment (mechanical for the vehicle elevator?) or maybe for future emergency access into and/or out of the parking floor. Or maybe it has something to do with the double-height space on floors 6 and 7.

Anyone else have any ideas?
