Columbia University Medical Center has just announced that Diller Scofidio + Renfro will be designing a new 14-story medical building on Haven Avenue between 171st and 172nd streets that will be home to high-tech class facilities for all four CUMC colleges as well as the biomedical program within Columbia University’s college of art and science.

The university tapped DS+R, along with Gensler, to create a new landmark for the medical center, one that will be visible from both the George Washington Bridge and Riverside Park.“The new building will have the best possible design that is attractive, comfortable, and appropriate for the intense kind of education that our students receive,” Dr. P. Roy Vagelos, a 1954 graduate of the school and former CEO of Merck, said in a release.

This is not their first project for Columbia, however—the firm is also designing a new business school building named at Henry Kravis at the university’s new Manhattanville campus.

“The new Medical and Graduate Education Building will be the social and academic anchor of the CUMC campus,” Elizabeth Diller said. “Spaces for education and socializing are intertwined to encourage new forms of collaborative learning among students and faculty.

This can be seen in the signature design feature, an exposed glass stack on the southern side of the building the designers call “the study cascade.” Like the rest of Columbia’s new buildings—many of which employ top designers in the field, like Steven Holl’s nearby athletic center in Inwoof—the project will be sustainable, aiming for LEED Gold status. It is set to begin construction in 2013

Columbia University to Build 14-Story Glass Tower in Washington Heights

Columbia University will soon break ground on a brand new 14-story medical and graduate building on its medical center campus in the heart of Washington Heights.

The 100,000-square-foot glass tower was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the same firm that designed the new Lincoln Center remodeling and the High Line. It's a south-facing undulating pillar of glass and steel with a 11,500-square-foot footprint that tapers to 5,000 square feet as it reaches its apex.

"In addition to serving as the principal design element for the building, the transparent façade of the study cascade is designed to serve as a visual landmark at the northern limit of Columbia University’s medical campus," reads a public release about the project.

The structure will contain high-tech classrooms, shared learning spaces and a "modern simulation center" for its students, which school officials say allows for "hands-on" learning.

The new construction will replace an existing five-story residential building at 104 Haven Ave., between West 171st and 172nd streets, that is owned by the school and now houses medical faculty.

Columbia’s $70M medical education building sets stage for advancement
14-story transparent tower has look of a sculpture in the sky

Columbia University recently unveiled plans to build one of the most eye-catching, attention-grabbing towers in the city for its medical center early next year on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River in Washington Heights. Renderings show a sun-drenched, 14-story sculptural space with see-through glass floors and dramatic cutaways that will literally open a window on the next generation of world-class doctors plying their craft.

The 100,000-square-foot — and $70 million — Medical and Graduate Education Building, on Haven Ave. at 171st St., will boast oversized landings, “floating terraces in the sky” and a stack of exposed glass boxes that architects call the “study cascade.”

With plans to create a new green park space on the building’s south side, the project will also be a boon to the surrounding community.

Boasting spectacular views of the George Washington Bridge, the tower is expected to break ground in early 2013 and open in late 2016, officials at Columbia University Medical Center say.

My thought exactly. With all the fantastic architecture being created by Columbia and Cooper Union and Cornell, NYU should be horribly embarrassed with the schlock they have dumped all over downtown. Even Fordham, The New School and City College are putting up some nice buildings. I hate NYU.
