To-kyo Massive Part 1 //sabotai does the biggest

I had the opportunity to spend 3 days in Tokyo on my way to the Philippines, which was so tempting that I just couldn't resist.

Nice photos.

Can someone please explain why about half the people are wearing surgical face masks? It looks really bizarre.

It's an Asian thing for when they get sick.

Interesting. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the spread of illness. Because that's a lot of sick people. I wonder whether a kind of mass neurosis is what's really behind it.

Thats more masks than you typically see. I'm guessing its because of allergy season.

Anyway, incredible photos. I love Tokyo.

People wear masks if they're sick, people around them are sick or if they're having allergies. It's actually considered rude not to wear one if you're sick.

In my experience, the majority of mask wearers do it because of hay fever, not because of sickness.

sabotai, you have done a truly great job of Tokyo my friend, way beyond the lazy clichés, very warm and loving look. You have captured the mix of looniness and sobriety that is characteristic of this great megatropolis.

I've noticed that a lot of Asians where them over here in Chicago and New York as well.

AWESOME set!

This is in a narrow, long, linear park overlooking the Chuo/Sobu lines on the left, right between Yotsuya and Ichigaya, right? Walked this path every week day for five straight school years. You probably walked through (or next to) my alma mater's campus.

I've been stoned out of my mind in the exact same swing this guy is sitting in! Albeit at 2am. Great place for hanami too.

Two reasons:

1. Public decorum demands that if you have allergies or a cold, you wear a mask in public so that when you sneeze or cough, it doesn't spray all over the people crowded next to you on the train. If someone sneezes without a mask . . . the visual daggers could kill you five times over.

2. This year in particular has record levels of both local pollen (hey fever) and "yellow sand" (pollen, Gobi dessert sand and of course pollution) blowing in from China. The media has been hyping this just like American media hypes whatever the latest calamity to assault us is. A quick look around my office right now tells me about 75% of the staff are wearing masks.
