Now that Big River Crossing is open, we really need retail in that vacant lot right across the street from the Artesian.

Honestly, I would rather see the developers of One Beale buy and refurbish 100 North Main instead of constantly procrastinating on 1B. Reskin it with glass, reopen the restaurant... I hope it isn't empty for 30 years like the Sterick.

Yeah I just read about the foreclosure deal today. With all the progress of rehabbing buildings downtown lately this is ridiculous. Hopefully something happens soon, I was skeptical of the original apartment/hotel idea due to the owner seeming shady.. this has pretty much just been the same feelings since they haven't announced anything and I constantly see articles about fire hazards etc.

It's ridiculous. Our tallest building empty? I can't accept that. It just seems like everytime we take two steps forward, something flies out of the sky and pushes us back one.

Editorial: Memphis Prospering, But Not Yet for All

https://www.memphisdailynews.com/new...t-yet-for-all/

Good development talk. I like this quote from this article. “We are in the midst of a great economic renaissance in Memphis,” Rob Thompson, part of the group that owns Clayborn Temple and is working on its revival, said this month. “But we have to work together with a collective consciousness of everyone in Memphis to ensure that this economic boom is a rising tide. … 1968 is still very relevant in our city. That has to change if Memphis – if when we say Memphis we really mean all of Memphis – is really going to truly prosper.”

Clayborn Reborn Effort Charts Different Pre-vitalization Path
By Bill Dries/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
For now, Smith and Thompson, with Montgomery Martin Contractors, have stabilized but haven’t renovated Clayborn Temple. And just stabilizing it was hard work once they secured the title to it, which was also a struggle. The church still looks like a work in progress, with some of its stained-glass windows damaged after emerging from years under plywood. Others are fully intact, and on a sunny day spread bright vivid colors across the floor and up the walls of stone and plaster.

By Andy Meek/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
The past year has seen financial institutions like Iberiabank and BancorpSouth head to the Memphis Medical District to open new branches, a trend that picked up steam this week with yet another bank following suit. Orion Federal Credit Union is the latest financial institution to head to the medical district to open a new branch. Orion opened its 10th Memphis-area location there this week.

Industrial Real Estate Competition Heats Up Between DeSoto, Marshall
By Madeline Faber/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
Marshall County is still in the fledgling stage, with 5.7 million square feet across 32 buildings, compared to DeSoto’s 38 million square feet across 137 buildings. DeSoto County is seeing a 5.5 percent vacancy while Marshall County is completely occupied, according to third-quarter data from Xceligent, a nationwide provider of property and listing information for the commercial real estate industry. Both counties are expanding, with 4.5 million square feet of construction activity underway between the two areas.

$92M Graceland Hotel Expected to Be a Catalyst for Whitehaven
By Bill Dries/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
The Heartbreak Hotel on Elvis Presley Boulevard was full Wednesday, Oct. 26 – its final night as a hotel. By the time the $92 million, 450-room Guest House at Graceland resort opened across the boulevard Thursday morning, many of the doors at the Heartbreak Hotel were missing their room numbers – taken as souvenirs by guests who filled the circa-1980s hotel in its final days. Elvis Presley Enterprises executives and Elvis Presley’s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, cut the ribbon Thursday morning on the resort as the lobby was bustling with guests.

Imperial Lanes will be torn down to make way for new business
Meagan Nichols, Reporter/ Memphis Business Journal

Quote:
The vacant Imperial Lanes bowling alley on Summer Avenue will be torn down and replaced by Planet Fitness. Built in 1958, Imperial Lanes closed its doors in 2009, since that time the owners have unsuccessfully tried to redevelop the parcel, until now.

Prairie Farms Expansion Stirs Neighborhood Controversy- Tobi Sells, Memphis Flyer. 10/28/16

http://www.memphisflyer.com/NewsBlog...od-controversy

This is interesting to me as since the Overton Square comeback of 2012 or so this seems to be a huge piece that sort of breaks up the whole area as an entertainment district. I was curious as time went on if offers for this and other areas would come up. Apparently they have but the facility plans to expand (with a PILOT granted from the city). I understand both sides I suppose as it's an old business that still provides jobs, but doesn't go with the fabric of the neighborhood.. and if there's a grand plan to link the trolleys down to the Square or things like that down the line I'd think more mixed use/hotel/etc would blend in for a better neighborhood overall. Either way just my thoughts after reading, not sure if anyone else has followed much about this, I live a mile or so down to the east and pretty much around this area of midtown often.

I believe anything that isn't restaurant/retail/entertainment is getting offers to move from the district. Check this article back in Dec. 2015

I remember reading that a while back. Also I know there was talk by Loeb of building more retail/office with apartments on top on the surface lot near the garage next to Hattiloo and also I think the lot on Madison next to Bayou. Also I see the oil change place on Union is for sale and I saw something regarding that site being redeveloped. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out and what's built in addition to what's already there.

Memphis based American Steamboat coming up with new boat complete with loft suites. I believe this is a former casino boat from Iowa somewhere:

I still believe 2019/2020 will be huge for Memphis if Viking is in the cruise market by then. I still think Memphis could see TATL via Norweigian Air with 4iver cruising being a catalyst for it.

That's a shame -- you would have thought converting that into an open space like a fitness center would have made that building a suitable case for reuse.
