University Campuses - Canada

This is part of Laval University's main campus. I didn't took pictures of all the buildings, only some of the main ones. It was a sunday afternoon, reason why there are no students wondering around!!!

This particular part of the building is dedicated to optics and photonics labs, reason why there are so few windows to prevent natural light from altering data collection. i love the dark, shiny granit they used here. The silo type structure is a particule accelerator I beleive.

Haven't had any chances to take some pictures of my new school yet, but here's the rendering for the new Global Innovation Exchange at Laurier.

that's quite the handsome campus there for Laval U. Thanks for this, you shattered my previous perception, that the whole of the campus was a concrete wasteland!

Well to be honest, the campus does have a surabundance of concrete and bitumen in some areas (I did purposefully present a good image of the campus through these pictures!! ). The campus was initially built on lands owned by the Church outiside the city so people relied heavily on cars to get to the campus. Hence, there are still a lot of surface parkings and roads on site. Also, the management of the University has promised for some time now to produce an extensive urbanization plan for the campus but so far, they have failed to deliver such a plan. The surrounding area keeps getting denser and denser so eventually, the need for parking will significantly diminish.

I suggest everyone should visit University of Toronto Mississauga if you ever have the displeasure to be suck in Mississauga. It's a small growing campus however the calibre of buildings is outstanding.

The 'old' university campuses are my favorites; which usually have old sandstone buildings with trees and vines growing on them.

Dalhousie and St. Mary's University in Halifax are my two favorites (mainly because I went to both schools, but my program was based at SMU). I will be in Halifax this weekend; so I will take some pics and upload them.

I second that. The residence rooms are also lightyears ahead of most of what downtown has to offer. The cafeteria food is decent and suprisingly fresh including pancakes made in front of you.

I must say I love the greenspace of the area. I saw a mother deer and her young when I bused in to visit a friend doing her bcomm on the MYWAY. It's also right beside one of the toniest neighborhoods in the country. My only issue was the transit was just as expensive as the TTC.

Well, the Laval campus I talked about in this thread is relatively recent. It was decided, around 1940, that it would be too difficult to expand the university directly in the old city so a new modern campus appeared on lands owned by the church outside the city center. That being said, the origin of Laval University dates back to 1663, when the Quebec Seminary was established to educate young priests. Although it had already been a place of higher learning for french canadians for a long time, it officially became a university only in 1852. It took more time to be chartered because it was a french institution. Then, in 1878, it opened a campus in Montréal, which will later become... the Université de Montréal.

Here's the Seminary, which housed all faculties until 1952. It is now the Architecture School of Laval University.

seriously though I loved the campus at STU, very quaint

However I found the college hill as a whole to be very "sanitized" all red brick buildings of a similar nature.

Personally in NB I like U de Moncton better because it has such a variety of new and old. Very interesting area.

Interesting that most of the responses to this thread so far are from easterners (especially Maritimers).

I personally went to UPEI and Dalhousie, but I have a soft spot for Mount Allison University. It's quite close to Moncton (in Sackville NB). My middle son goes there. Perhaps I'll go down soon and take some pictures to post here.

This is a good idea for a thread.

I remember when I was going to Carleton in Ottawa {which is instant 1960s university 101} and was dating a guy from QC and I went to see him and I was shocked and very disappointed at Laval. I always just assumed that Laval would be a beautiful old campus .....what a let down that was.
The only redeeming feature of Carleton was that at the time {annd it may still be} it was Canada's most "accessible" university for people with disabilities as all the buildings were connected with Carleton legendary tunnel system and all building were accessible from it.
UBC, McGill, UTor, and UWO are my favorites.

I should add a caveat to that, they are my favorite large school campuses. Canada has many lovely small university campuses.
