probably have to find out who the present owners are and get their permission. Or you would be considered a trespasser.

The film liason office should be able to help you with that. Well, they should. Whether they actually will is another matter. My hubby has had some dealings with them and they are somewhat less than competent. Still, it can't hurt to ask.

The good news is that 2009 is expected to be a stronger year for Ontario. Fuel prices are down, the Canadian dollar value has dropped relative to the U.S. dollar and, many of the U.S. states are backing away from incentives while Ontario has just announced that their tax credits are permanent.

Hamilton ‘held its own’ in 2008 with 77 productions and a total of 763 prep, shoot and wrap days and a direct spend of $6,625,000. Most of this activity came from domestic production, which tends to be the largest portion of filming in Hamilton.

I've always been curious about the economics of the local film industry, considering how much of a film can get trucked in (at least when you're dealing with out-of-town filmmakers and production companies). Is "direct spend" meant to say that all of that $6.6 million went into the city over those 763 days? ($8,700 a day/$86K a production seems like it might.)

They use local IATSE crews, so there's wages as well.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking City as much as city. The core is obviously the domestic production work, which is less affected by money markets and stateside stay-at-home incentives. But it's still a wild card. 2004 had a similar number of prep/shoot/wrap days as 2008, but the other numbers were considerably different: 48 productions, 740 Prep, shoot & wrap days, $10.5 million direct impact. Not all of that can be pinned on the relative strength of the loonie, either -- the average value of the Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar in 2005 rose over the year previous, but the Hamilton film sector also hit its biggest numbers to date in 2005, with almost twice as many productions and days as 2004.

There's filming going on in front of the Foster building on King E. as well. No clue what it is.

Apparently they were filming for something down in the Gore called Casino Jack.

I do wonder though, with the dollar going back up how much filming there will be going forward.

Here's the link to Casino Jack:

Kevin Spacey, David Cross, Barry Pepper and Kelly Preston.

Meh... it's a film.

Yes it does... and I typed "David Frost" by accident.

Dunno why I was thinking about the man who interviewed Richard Nixon instead of the worlds first Analrapist.

I think that might have been my favourite joke from the entire series.

Anyway, I came here to say that I heard they were also filming in St. Paul's Cathedral

Just saw this year's MADD video (mothers against drunk driving) done by Fenian films located on Locke St S. Looks like they used King St for a lot of the shots in the vehicle. Very nicely done.

Current TV heading to Canada

June 12, 2009

TORONTO – Al Gore’s Current TV has received a green light to go north with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has OK’d a Canadian launch for the user-generated TV news and current affairs service in the fall.

The CRTC ordered that 35% of the user-generated content on the proposed Current Canada service, a joint venture with Canada’s public broadcaster, must be Canadian-driven.

The Canadia Current TV service will feature a Web site and a domestic digital channel.

And in line with Canadian ownership rules, the CBC will hold an 80% interest in the operating company Current Media Canada, with the U.S.-based Current TV retaining a 20% voting interest.

The movie Real Time has been playing on Rogers cable for free lately, so I watched it. It's a dreadful piece of shite, though with two redeeming qualities: one, you get to see Hamilton; and two, Randy Quaid does an Australian accent rather well (to my non-Australian ears).

But really, if Randy Quaid weren't in it then the only reason for watching it would be to see Hamilton. In light of which, a question to anyone who has seen it: where is the scene with the hooker? I don't recognize it.
