Nelson, Canada's Smallest "Big City"

Nelson is a small town of 10 000 residents nestled in the Selkirk Mountains on the shores of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, Canada.

Despite its small population, the city has a very mature and active downtown core.

It was incorporated in 1897 and has a long industrial past.

For a town of such small size it has a surprisingly number of interesting locations for the urban enthusiast.

The sky is a little hazy in these pics because of forest fires burning nearby at the time.

Starting with the more industrial part of town.

There are many interesting small parks and staircases such as this throughout the town, playing well with its naturally steep topography.

If you ever find your way into the southern BC interior, Nelson is a must see.

I had not been to Nelson since I was about 10 years old and to say the least I was shocked. The downtown core (day and night), the local parks, everywhere was more active and vibrant than cites 10 to 20 times larger that I have been too. Unlike some other summer towns in BC it has a full feeling of being lived in, not just a single season town.

And yes, it does have the Tram (it runs along the Lake Shore and is maintained and operated by some local enthusiasts). Of course I had to ride it while I was in town (took my nieces, they loved it!).

You should get paid by the BC ministry of tourism : I didn't even know Nelson at all (I had heard the name, but that was pretty much it), and now I want to go!

Lovely town - and great pictures

Great pics! I love Nelson and was just there this summer (along with Fernie, South Okanagan, Revelstoke and the Rockies). There are some great historic mining towns in the Kootenays but none as extensive as Nelson.

You beat me to it! I was thinking, "It's $4.20 a pint, what the hell is there to think about?!" Maybe it says "No Shoes, No Service" on the other side of the sign...

Great pics, the courthouse is a gem.

One of those towns I've long seen on the map and wondered whether it was worth visiting some day. I'll be sure to make a detour next time I'm in the BC Interior.

Thanks for all the great comments! There are a few nice communities with their own active and historic cores near Nelson that are also worth a visit if you were to come to Nelson.

Thanks! Please tell them that, it would be a dream job of mine

And yes, soon after taking this pic I did pop in for a 4.20 pint... or 2. I think that sign sums up Nelson perfectly.

That's fabulous, thanks for sharing.

How did it happen? Did they somehow ban strip plazas and cul-de-sacs and the mall? Is there sprawl?

it's a very hippie town, they host a huge festival called shambala and its geographic location has helped prevent sprawl, they even stopped walmart from coming to town, a lot of draft dodgers ended up there and stayed

anyway an article on the town from the ny times

I imagine there is some spillover from Vancouver, and maybe Calgary, due to high housing prices.

My partner and I daydream about moving to a small town like this if we could find work. Neither of us wanted much to do with small towns while we were single, but now that we’re engaged, it’s looking more and more appealing.

From what I have seen it has one sprawly shopping center with the regulars (such as a super market) near the lake shore that looks to have been built on an old industrial site. Even that though has some odd quirks to it, such as the tram line running right through the parking lot.

The city was economically depressed for many decades, so it did not suffer much "urban renewal" from the 50s to the 80s, but it did stay somewhat afloat as the regional Centre and an influx of American draft dodgers that fled to Canada during the Vietnam War.

Another interesting point is that when all of BCs energy suppliers were consolidated into a single crown corporation (BC Hydro) Nelson refused, and to this day they still own their own power supply (a dam).

As for Rambo, that was filmed in a small town called Hope about a two hour drive east of Vancouver.

Roxanne though (with Steve Martin) was completely filmed in Nelson along with a few other notable movies.

There is not so much spillover from Vancouver and Calgary as there is in other interior locations (such as the Okanagan and the Cranbrook area). Most people there seem to be from surrounding communities (or Nelson itself) and those who do move there from out of town seem to become pretty perminent themselves. What I mean by that is it is not the traditional spillover one sees where people buy a second house or they keep their lives in Vancouver / Calgary and live part time by distance. (For the most part, that is)
