Garden Valley, Idaho

Garden Valley is in the Boise Mountains about an hours drive north of Boise in alpine scenery where the Middle Fork and South Fork of the Payette River flow. This valley is part of the Boise Metropolitan Area and the largest town is Crouch along the Middle Fork and the smaller unincorporated settlement of Garden Valley is along the South Fork. This link tells the history of this area http://gvchamber.org/garden-valley-history/

The Payette River system is also very popular for whitewater, both rafting and kayaking. The South Fork is classified Class IV and the North Fork (which flows from McCall to Banks where it meets the South Fork) is a Class V river which is said to have the most challenging whitewater in the Lower 48. The Middle Fork is a smaller river with a lot of big boulders in the water but flattens and widens out as it enters Crouch near the confluence with the South Fork.

Oh yes, natural hot springs along the rivers are also what defines this beautiful area. Those are sacred, so no pics in this thread

Enjoy!

Banks is at the confluence of the South Fork and the North Fork of the Payette and forms the Main Payette River which eventually meets the Snake River.
From Banks you head east on the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway into Garden Valley.

The birds love leaving their mark on informational signs.

There is more to this little mountain town, but I didn't have time to photograph every building.

Six Mile Creek Falls
the Middle Fork is at the bottom of the canyon.

If you stare for a minute you will see faces in the cliff walls.

Big Falls on the South Fork Canyon.
Big Falls is a waterfall that rafters usually have to portage and put back in below the falls. Daredevils will run this in their kayaks.

Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time? That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains.-Hermann Hesse

I am starved for this type of easily-accessible nature without hoards of other people ruining the experience. Very jealous.

As always, thanks for sharing your great pics!

That non wild and rustic pool is part of the Terrace Lakes Resort, fed by hot springs, so it has it wild side.

I've lived in a few larger cities and the outdoors were always crowded. Boise has so much wilderness around it that if you know where to go you can be all alone. There are of course the crowded, popular and easily accessible areas, but with the right kind of vehicle, Subaru for instance, such as mine below, , you can go really deep in the forests.

Thanks for the comments!

Yes, it's a small mountain village. It takes a village to create a city

Thanks Danny. I have a strong connection to the beauty of Idaho. I hope I convey that through my photography.

great photos.

that valley is a great, short trip during the summer to escape the 100 degree heat.

terrace lakes is a very fun golf course, if you haven't tried it. lots of elevation changes, front nine is more open, back nine holes are carved through the pines and very narrow, and usually in great shape.

Speaking of smoke, The Pioneer Fire, which began July 18, has burned in the Boise National Forest south and east of Garden Valley, north of Idaho City, and is currently near 97,000 acres and is about 50% contained. Last month people playing with their stupid drones near the fire interfered with the aircraft fighting the fires. Boise has suffered through several days of heavy smoke in the air.

Here is a view from NASA:

To the the hundreds of Firemen and Women fighting this fire, Thank You! Idaho appreciates you!

looks great! I'm very intrigued by Boise. It seems like a nice sized city.

Do you have any pictures of the Birds of Prey park? That sounds very interesting.
