Our own Copes went from St. John's to Quito to watch the World Cup (and on to Brazil after for the final).

He's in a bar in Quito RIGHT NOW. And Ecuador just won. Awesome. So jealous!

Colombia is my team this year! We know a girl from there living here.

Seems most people were surprised supporters of the Americans, though.

And the girl on HITS FM is obsessed with Germany.

N.L. has highest increase in restaurant spending during World Cup soccer games

It's already well known that there are a lot of hockey fans in Newfoundland and Labrador, but who would have thought Canada’s biggest soccer fans might be found in this province.

Quote:
Some findings by Moneris Solutions indicate Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest week-over-week increase in restaurant spending during FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup games in June.

Provincially, Newfoundland (16.56 per cent), Manitoba (10.16 per cent) and Nova Scotia (9.26 per cent) had the highest week-over-week increases in spending in the country.

When cities were compared, North York, Ont. showed the highest week-over-week spending increase with a city average of 22.49 per cent, followed by Ottawa, Ont. with an increase of 16.19 per cent and Winnipeg, Man. with a 14.56 per cent increase.

The Uruguay versus England game on June 19 showed the highest increase in spending at 11 per cent, followed closely by the Brazil versus Croatia game on June 12 with a 7.2 per cent increase.

Restaurant sales in the two-hour period of the five games played from June 12 to 19, were compared with the same two-hour window on the same day of the week, from the beginning of June when there were no World Cup games.

My Brazilian friend only posted, "What a shitty day?"

And all his Canadian friends are cooing him like it's just a personal bad day.

Also, this is making the rounds on my FB:

Is Brazil rioting right now? That loss will go down as the worst in history. In the semis on home soil? Wow.

Great game. Watched it my parents. I forgot how shouty/jumpy Dad gets for soccer.

"At least they can play this time. Jesus, last time the bloody ref had the whistle wore out."

Mom was Argentina all the way, but Dad was rooting for Germany so it was fun.
