Contexualism isn’t
always “nonsense” when it comes to things like setbacks and quality of design/materials though. Just look at the huge number of Kaufman/Poon budget hotels with their huge plazas and garish materials and the damage they’ve done to the cityscape of the Garment District. Or the rampant value-engineering that ruined 5 Beekman. Or the travesty that is the watered-down design of Moinian’s 3 Hudson Blvd. Those are the cases where a little bit of neighborhood opposition honestly wouldn’t be inappropriate. Unfortunately, howver, the NIMBY crowd has decided to ignore those
real issues and fight against attractive, high-quality buildings just because they’re tall. In that regard I agree with you—their opposition to these towers is completely unwarranted.
