It's been a while since my last Oakland thread... that is, a month and a half lol.
Art And Soul is a music festival that has been running 11 years strong in the heart of Downtown Oakland in City Center. In its 11 years it has seen everybody from the likes of Will Downing to Tony! Toni! Tone! to MC Hammer rock the stage, and this year has not skimped out on the big acts... some of this year's acts include the upcoming R&B Oakland native Goapele and the old school Oakland favorite Tower of Power, which both play tomorrow. It has become one of the premiere annual festivals in Oakland, and for good reason; it is exceptionally well-run and the offerings get better every year. The festival also provides a look into the demography of Oakland; you'll generally see some of everybody at the festival.
Another thing that you'll probably notice I focused on towards the end was the Oakland Black Cowboy Association, a group commemorating the forgotten contribution of black cowboys in the west coast and in a larger context America. They've put on the black cowboy parade - the only celebration of its kind in the world - every year for the last 37 years that always begins in West Oakland, arguably the heart of the West Coast black population. Needless to say I'll be in West Oakland this October armed with a camera when the festivities start.
That's all the time I'll spend writing... on to the pics.
