Ahhh Weeds, one of my favorite bars in the city! My Aunt is really good friends with the crazy old guy who owns the place. Here's to hoping that bar always remains standing as a oasis in a sea of suburban hell.

Is Sergio still alive? I thought I had heard he had died. Used to go to weeds back in the early-mid 90's quite a bit. great beer garden. Haven't been there probably in 5 - 6 years

Even a 50 story tower would have less of a traffic footprint than all the proposed strip centers combined.

No I've never been to any of the establishments on weed street, but they seemed to do just fine and added a dynamic to the neighborhood if you can even call n/c that.

Hmm... Maybe they should go back and repaint those soffits and columns in the Bond building. A dark grey would help them blend into the background and help the shiny exterior of the glass shine as a monolithic surface like the original limestone panels.

VDT-designed Lakeview Mixed-use, Mariano's

Wow - not sure how I missed this one. Very exciting stuff.....
So, who is the new owner of this parcel?? Hoping it's someone that can really come in and execute quickly....I'm not sure how you could miss with an infill like this in this type of dense neighborhood. I love how (after some earlier delays and slower-going projects), Mariano's is really being aggressive with their launch into the city....they've understood there's a huge untapped existing urban consumer demand for a product like theirs. From what I've seen of their stores thus far, it's definitely a more pleasant experience than a solid majority of competing options.

On the topic of Mariano's, has there been any recent news on their planned South Loop store at 16th and Clark?

^ I would love to see renderings of either of these.

Nightlife junkies to get new option in River North

Quote:
By: Ryan Ori January 04, 2012

American Junkie, an edgy bar and restaurant near Phoenix, plans to debut later this year in River North, hoping to stand out in the crowded nightclub scene with a new, two-story building featuring a retractable roof.

An affiliate of American Junkie has agreed to lease a 15,000-square-foot building at 15 W. Illinois St. to be developed by Chicago-based LG Development Group.

I love Weeds, its really the only decent (read: non- Trixie/Chad) bar in the area, although even it gets pretty douchey now as the night wears on. But as far as a place to get a cheap shot and beer and play a quick round of pool without too much hassle it cant be beat. Bartenders are always friendly and conversational too.
