Murano Hole Filled-in

Was by the Murano site last night. The excavated hole has been neatly refilled with the pyramid of dirt that was piled to the north. A couple weeks ago a poster stated that this would happen (^^^…). Since the garage will be north of the building facing JFK, I guess there was no need for a deep foundation. The digging must have been for HasMat concerns?

i dont know about no need for a deep foundation...the building is still pretty tall and therefore will need a corresponding foundation...the higher you go the deeper the foundation...i dont like the sound of this...i love the murano like a fat kid love cake.

Still about a 8-10 foot hole.

The hole was not completely filled. Still about 10 foot deep from ground level.

The info about the hole being filled in was from Phillyblogs Murano thread dated 2/16. Here's the quote (by Phantic):

Yesterday I was talking to one of the demolition crew guys on the murano site. I asked him about when the construction was going to get started and he said he thought it would be about a month. Apparently, they are going to re-fill that large hole in the next couple of weeks.

When he told me this I asked him about underground parking and he said there would be no parking underground but a side parking lot that would actually go over the top of JFK.

I apologize if anyone's already talked about this but it just seemed so odd that I wanted to see if anyone else had heard something different or knew what this guy was talking about.

Going over the top of JFK? I assume he just means towers over it. We've seen the renderings with the garage so we knew that was coming.

I don't know why they'd refill the hole though.

The answer: soil mitigation. The process by which soil is removed and examined for toxins. At least that's what I was told by someone in my office who knows a lot about that sort of thing. Concrete will be poured in about three weeks, according to a sales office person.

I hope that cleared things up.

it's not going to go over the top of JFK -- there is a septa viaduct on the other side of JFK -- but it might go up to JFK, where cars can enter and exit the garage. lookie:

BTW....It does look like they have re-filled most of the hole at the site however. Its only about 6 feet deep now (as of yesterday). I was in the sales office as well and they did say that there wouldn't be any basement (which still sounds strange). I tried to get a construction start date and the receptionist said it was coming soon but nothing in-stone yet. Can't wait till it REALLY gets going. I liked seeing the life sized corner room model inside. If you get a chance, stop in there.

It's a shame the parking isn't underground.

naw, that's not an alley -- that's the trader joe's parking lot and the entrance to the garage. (presumably, anyway.) the murano will, however, be reintroducing van pelt street to the north side of market (in between the murano itself and the after six building), so i guess that's where cars from that side will enter (and the others from JFK?).

anyone (coughswinefeldcough) wanna stop by the office and ask?

I'm still not loving this garage. It seems quite awkward placed right alongside JFK, functional though it may be. I hope it isn't terribly ugly.

I agree with the garage. I wish that the garage was underground, but at the same time am still happy that the Murano will be built along with the rest of the condo projects.

I suppose excavation for a garage of that size would be a dicey proposal for that particular spot, hemmed in by the foundations of 2121 Market, Commerce Square and the Market Street Subway which runs extra wide in that region.

Sigh.

Isn't JFK raised up from the level of Market Street at this point? Depending on how high this garage is...it probably wont go too high over the level of JFK, which is why this garage shouldn't be too bad.
