Work launched on Seville condo project

M0NTREAL, QUE.: APRIL 11, 2010--Plans to be announced Monday April 12, 2010 in latest bid to rescue the western neighbourhood anchored by the abandoned Seville Theatre on St-Catherine St. West corner Chomedey. Here is a view of the interior of the building.Photograph by: Marie-France Coallier, THE GAZETTEMontreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay marked the start of work on a $100 million real estate development project Tuesday at the site of the former Seville Theatre.

The block of Ste. Catherine St. W. between Lambert Closse and Chomedey Sts. has been an eyesore for years, but the mayor said the new 21-storey building should be “a catalyzer” for the surrounding neighbourhood.

Twenty per cent of the 425 units in the building will be affordable housing and the developer will give the city administration $650,000 to spend on improving the homeless situation in the neighbourhood, he noted.

Following public hearings on the project, the developer agreed to lower the height of the project from 25 to 21 storeys.

Artifacts from the Seville Theatre will be incorporated in the new building and a café will be built on the site of the former theatre. Construction is to start this fall and first move-ins are planned for the spring of 2012.

This is excellent news! I remeber my days a Dawson, that plave got worse and worse as the days passed. A nightmare is an apt term to desribe that stretch. One day when I get old i will enjoy seeing the ste-catherine stretch being fixed aswell! yes!

wow whoa whoa~! Its stunning, and in a location that really needs this.

Of course the OCPM will destroy this building (or emasculate it down to 28 floors) and frustrate yet again our poor Panzini.

Like the Hilton Proposal. Hope that Dino Bimbaru and his gang don't destroy it.

Best case scenario: Hilton goes up but with a height of 28 floors.

question... the proposed 701 university is 33fl ...isnt it office? it should be at least 130m tall why is it only 109m in the MTL diagram?

http://magil-laurentian.com/en/701U_en.pdf here you can clearly see the 701 is much taller than delta hotel... i believe delta is 100m tall...

Yeah, I'd say 130m sounds more accurate.

Thank you mr. John! Excellent phototour!

I am honestly impressed at the speed of the construction of the OSM and la maison durable. Also, I find the OSM building to be surprisingly imposing, a great addition!

I suppose this is a good thing, but I am really gonna miss exploring the cavernous depths of that creepy monument.
