Probably at either the Provincial Archives or the municipal archives (I didn't realize they were available to the public at the municipal archives).

When i used them for a project a few years back i had to get written permission from the owners. Too bad they are still copyrighted and not truly available for 'public' use.

That map would be fairly old as the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg hasn't exsisted since the Unicity Act was passed in 72.

Interesting though .. they show a high amount of residental development intermixed with commercial along Main Street.

Here's a pic I just scanned and blew up from the postcard. It's by William Notman and taken from the top of the Manitoba Hotel. The year would probably be around 1895 -- the original McIntyre Block, which burned on February 11, 1898, is still on Main Street (the Manitoba Hotel burned on February 9, 1899). You can see St. Andrew's Church in the background (at Elgin and Ellen) and the Post Office and City Hall, etc. Also, notice the enormous number of telegraph and electrical wires strung along the poles on Main Street.

Interesting to see the imposing structures newly-built with brick and stone, mixed with the primative relics of the city's earliest years--small wood-frame houses and shop fronts (like the one at the NW corner of Portage and Main).

I think the Western Canada Loan Co. building (also at the NW corner) was what replaced the building that started it all--Henry McKenney's original 1862 edifice

And what's that lumpy golf-dome like structure sitting behind the buildings on Main Street, off Albert? I saw that in another old shot someone posted (maybe me)...

That might be the "Royal Hall" that John A. Macdonald spoke at sometime in the early/mid 1870s?

Is it my imagination or did Central Park look way more forrested back then? There certainly appears to be quite a few trees.
