Renowned architecture critic Nikolaus Pevsner described Shrewsbury as 'England's finest Tudor town'. I think there would be a few other towns which might dispute that but there are a lot of Tudor buildings in the town centre. No doubt that is because in the 15th/16th centuries Shrewsbury was in the top 10 largest settlements in Britain. Today though with a population of only 75,000 it isn't even in the top 100. The Industrial Revolution largely passed the town by while other places were rapidly booming in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Unfortunately several important Tudor buildings were demolished to make way for horrors during the mid 20th century but probably not as many as in numerous other British towns and cities.

One industrial claim to fame that the town has though is the world's first iron framed building, currently semi-derelict and awaiting redevelopment if/when that gets funding.

Iron-framed was the direct precursor of steel-framed which would later be the technology for the first skyscrapers.

Tudor buildings might be what the town is best known for in terms of architecture but there are also quite a few Georgian era buildings, like the terraces and townhouses in some of these pics from the late 18th century. Plus a bonus halloween bride.

Beautiful. Was just in this area a few weeks ago (drove to Conwy Wales from London). Now I really wished I had stopped. Isn’t that big historic aqueduct nearby?

Yeah, you would have passed around the town on that trip i guess, Conwy is a nice little place on the North Wales coast with a great medieval castle.

We have a couple of famous bridges not too far away, both are World Heritage sites, the Pontsyccttle aqueduct is around 25 miles to the NW while Ironbridge is around 10 miles to the East.

London to Conwy via Shrewsbury is a pretty long drive, about 5 hours I reckon, it wasn't just there and back in the day I hope!
