We had another stabbing in St. John's over the weekend. I believe that puts us at one murder and two stabbings for the year.

We generally have a murder every two or three years, so that doesn't shock me... but the two stabbings downtown genuinely do shock and worry me. One was even random. This second one could be as well, we don't know yet.

Remember the guy who said that driving through Dartmouth at night was the scariest thing he ever experienced?

I remember years back when someone tried to argue that unemployment was so low in Halifax because all the unemployed people were murdered that year.

Stabbings don't even make the news in Thunder Bay anymore, unfortunately. Either that or they've stopped unexpectedly. Our police don't reveal much about what crimes they're seeing, most of the time.

This makes me laugh as well. I have never felt uneasy when driving around Dartmouth at night. I believe walking is safe as well as long as you stay aware of the surroundings.

Ha! I encounter those situations here with some of my relatives and friends who have never left St. John's.

Me: "I'm going to Sobeys, be back later."
Friend: "It's 10 p.m. Go to the Dominion on Blackmarsh. I wouldn't trust Ropewalk Lane at this time of night."

It just kills me every time.

And it's even worse when I see the local bad guys, the skeets who try to be intimidating. I just want to laugh and go give them a pat on the head or something.

As sketchy as the strip-mall area is across the street, Ropewalk Sobeys is so busy 24/7, nothing could possibly happen there. Silly folk.

I've actually been following a St. John's crime map online, just to see how exactly crime is distributed around town. There have been 12 reported stabbings, though most of which have been fairly minor. The exceptions would be the random stabbing on Torbay Road last winter, and the one on Sunday.

And one other random stabbing, by Harbourside Park, right on Water Street. It was only within the past several months. The guy's throat was slashed and he managed to flag down paramedics. Still he nearly died, lost a lot of blood.

They arrested someone with mental health issues.

Highway of Tears has one murderer named. He died in a US prison in 2006. He is named as the likely murderer of Colleen McMillen in 1974.

I know it's not a city homicide, but eh, it's one of the biggest serial killing investigations in North America right now.

It's awful. An old friend of mine's sister went missing a year and a half ago just off the highway, still haven't found her...

Good to see at least one guy be linked to these murders, and glad he was rotting in a prison, too.

Been a ton of random stabbings in Winnipeg lately, too. One thing I've noticed about Calgary, is here its so...tame...crime-wise relative to Winnipeg. This is a good thing. I'm still trying to figure out why its like this, because there is a fair bit of drug culture in the city yet I have yet to hear of random stabbings that seem to happen on a weekly basis in Winnipeg, at least lately.

A targeted shooting killed one person and injured another in South Winnipeg today. The second individual is in stable condition.

I believe that is homicide 21 for Winnipeg.

Not very often we hear of this. St. John's is back down to zero homicides for the year after St. John's police rule that there wasn't enough evidence to prove a homicide in the death of Patrica Rice.

Quote:
Paradise death no longer classified as homicide: RNC

The RNC announced this afternoon the death of Patricia Rice, whose remains were discovered in Paradise July 25, is no longer being treated as a homicide.
The RNC says the case is now classified as a sudden death investigation.

A news release notes that, at the time of the discovery, there was reason to suspect death was suspicious, and a homicide investigation was commenced. The investigation failed to find support for a conclusion of homicide, and recent laboratory results provided by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner casts further doubt that this is a homicide.

The RNC Major Crime Unit is asking anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

It's good that it's back at zero, but... yeah, weird. And unusual circumstances.

Three different bar stabbings last night. Two stable and one in critical condition.

Edmonton police find human head in garbage bag
Homicide investigated near Vegreville

A man whose severed head was found in a bag in a northeast Edmonton alley earlier this week is the victim of a homicide that wasn't a random act of violence, police said today.

RCMP Insp. Gerry Scott gave more details of the killing while speaking to reporters at a news conference Friday morning.

The body was discovered in a ditch near Ranfurly, Alta., last Saturday.

However, police are not releasing the name of the victim or how he was killed.

Edmonton police discovered the head in a garbage bag in a back alley near 132nd Avenue and 72nd Street in the Balwin neighbourhood Wednesday.
