Those pics of China are off the hook. They are in a Golden Age.

Meanwhile we here in ‘Murica just keep building McMansions, strip centers, and car washes!

Beijing's hutong restoration - there are 4,550 traditional streets left. The plan is to recover the old city 2016-2035.

Before restoration - the poorest areas of the city

vibrant, full of businesses too:

Whoa, wait, the city has spent the last 40 years tearing down their rich history and now after tearing most of it down they are going to rebuild it? Well, that seemed like a massive waste, but at least the mindset has changed in China wherein they actually care about their history now and don't want to replace all of it with generic commie block apartments and generic glass skyscrapers with huge open areas reminiscent of urban planning in America during the mid 1900's.

So are they rebuilding and restoring even stuff thats completely gone now? If so, thats fan freaking tastic. The hutongs in Beijing were one of the most amazing places Ive ever walked through when I lived there.

Half of all hutongs have been destroyed over the last century. The ones they're rebuilding are the ones that survived destruction. These survivors however are almost unrecognisable from the original middle class courtyard homes, having been built over with 20th century add-ons, the courtyards filled in, and the exterior defaced by shops.

In the past

By the late 20th Century - the garrulous homes had become so subdivided due to the lack of development during the tumultuous 19th and 20th Centuries, despite the booming population, the average resident of Beijing averaged 1 sq metre of living space by the 1980s, with entire families sharing a room, and several families sharing a wing of the original home. Once rich houses had degenerated into slums, hence why the authorities were so unbothered about bulldozing them, despite their antiquity up to 300 years old:

My god, those restorations are glorious. When I lived there in 2007, the hutongs were incredible but full of trash and even human waste in the streets. Glad they're cleaning the surviving ones up and hopefully hardly any more tear downs will occur.

I'm glad Chinese cities stopped (or slowed down) tearing those things down.
