Seems like every couple of days there is major news in Memphis. All good too. Excited about seeing all the cranes in the beginning of 2020 to include the convention center and the Beautiful Lake District in Arlington is doing prep work already.

I'm leaning more towards the former in that regard.

EDIT: Never mind. The hotel component hasn't changed.
The Minority Business Council will be hosting a meeting very early in January for this project. Its about to start coming out the ground. Finally!!!

Plans for hotel on Main Street on top of Royal Furniture building

Exclusive: Developer buys Downtown furniture store, plans to build hotel on top
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/..._news_headline

New York developer recently purchased the Downtown Royal Furniture store, with hopes to build a hotel on top of it.

Tom Intrator — the man behind the redevelopment of 18 S. Main St. — bought the 122 S. Main St. building for $3.5 million. He told the MBJ Monday, Jan. 7, that he wants to renovate the existing structure into a high-end restaurant and build a boutique hotel on top of it.

"[Our] frontrunner [plan] has been to develop the existing structure to a very, very high-end [restaurant, and] go vertical over it, probably with a hotel," Intrator said. "What you’ll have from the outside looks like a blend of the original arch, with new architecture above it."

Restaurant, Airbnb rentals, apartments planned for vacant Downtown Ambassador Hotel

Quote:
The now-vacant building that was once home to the historic Ambassador Hotel could soon get a second life that will include a restaurant and retail on the bottom floor and 10 new apartments on the upper floors.

The plan would be to make about half the units into short-term rentals available through websites like Airbnb, while the other half would be available to rent long term, depending on demand.

City breaks ground on Convention Center project

Memphis Business Journal:

Quote:
Memphis officially broke ground on the long-awaited, and occasionally delayed, Memphis Cook Convention Center renovations — a milestone that officials hope is a harbinger of brighter days for the city's tourism industry.
"Nearly 40 million people drive over that bridge every single year and they see a building that looks dated. Well, soon, they will see a building that is modern, sleek, and a welcoming building to everyone coming in here," Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said at the event. "The interior will be more functional and allow for a better overall experience. This renovation is emblematic of everything that is happening in the City of Memphis right now. Memphis has momentum."

Strickland noted that the $200 million project will not be paid for with general fund dollars but will be funded through a mixture of Tourism Development Zone (TDZ) money and hotel/motel taxes.
