Interesting, the picture with the article has the Kansas City skyline in the background, even though KC isn't on the list.

ACS expansion to bring 300-plus jobs to San Antonio

from recenter.tamu.edu
Quote:
Affiliated Computer Services Inc. (ASC) will retain 538 jobs and add 300 more at Port San Antonio under an agreement between the company and the port. ACS already has begun hiring the workers for its expansion. The expansion will mean that an estimated 390 more jobs will be created in spin-off and support services employment for an annual economic impact of $99 million.

ACS considered several other locations, but the port was able to offer its former headquarters building at 43 Billy Mitchell Blvd., near the former Kelly AFB gate. The company plans to occupy 74,000 of the building's 80,000 sf. The port will spend $10.8 million to gut and to refurbish the building, which is scheduled for occupation in early April 2010.

ACS and the port have worked out a five-year lease, with three two-year options for the building, which will be certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design universal green building rating system.

U.S. migration may be down overall, but these vibrant metro areas are still attracting newcomers.

In Depth: 10 Cities Where Americans Are Relocating Unemployment is on the rise, credit is tight, and consumers aren't spending--which means they aren't picking up and moving much either. Very few places in America saw significant population growth in 2008.

But the buzzing metropolitan area of Denver bucked that trend. Its population increased by 2.17% in 2008. In 2007, it increased by 2.09%. In 2008, Denver was the 10th-fastest growing metro area in the U.S.

S.A. unemployment rate falls

from mysa.com business pages
Quote:
By William Pack - Express-News

Labor market growth in the San Antonio area last month has a Trinity University professor thinking our economic turmoil could be bottoming out.

“Normally, mixed signals tell us we're getting toward the bottom,” economics professor Jorge Gonzalez said.

That does not mean job numbers are about to take off again since employers may be even more cautious about adding positions following this downturn than in the past, Gonzalez said.

But with 2,700 jobs added to the area labor market in April and the unemployment rate falling to 5.4 percent from 5.9 percent a month earlier, the trends no longer are consistently negative.

S.A. is top-ranked economic performer

By William Pack - Express-News

Quote:
AT&T Inc.'s departure may have sullied its image and the recession brought an end to the boom times, but San Antonio has not taken the economic beating other U.S. cities have, a new Brookings Institution report says.

In fact, its economy has outperformed all of the nation's largest cities through the first quarter of 2009, the study says.

Being a top-ranked economy is nothing new for San Antonio. Just a little more than a year ago, the city finished second to Oklahoma City in a Forbes.com study identifying the most recession-proof metro areas.

Alan Berube, a co-author of the report who also is research director for the institution's Metropolitan Policy Program, said it wasn't one overriding factor that pushed San Antonio to the top.

Instead, solid scores on a variety of measures were responsible for the city's ranking.

“San Antonio's numbers look strong precisely because of what your economy is based on,” Berube said.

The local economy is driven by sectors such as health care and insurance that didn't fall as badly as other sectors, was shielded from the downturn by military expansions and, like other cities in Texas, didn't participate in “the ridiculous run-up in housing prices” early on that triggered meltdowns in many areas, Berube said.

“San Antonio didn't lose as much in the first place, so it could be ready to turn around sooner,” he said.

Brookings' MetroMonitor report, which is being released today, provides what the institution calls “the first ‘beneath the hood' look at the impact of the recession on metropolitan America.”

It measures changes in employment totals, unemployment rates, housing prices, the value of goods and services produced by cities and other factors through the first three months of the year to identify which cities are performing well and which are not.

Texas is well-represented in the top-performing metro areas.

Austin, Houston, Dallas and McAllen finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, after Oklahoma City at No. 2. El Paso also scored well at 11th. At the very bottom of the list was Detroit.

S.A. unemployment rate reaches 5.8 percent

By Creighton Welch on Jun 19, 09 09:50 AM

Unemployment keeps rising in Texas and San Antonio, but it's still not even close to the national level.

The unemployment rate in San Antonio reached 5.8 percent in May, up from 5.4 percent in April and 4.1 percent in May 2008, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

The statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate reached 7.1 percent in May, while the national rate hit 9.4 percent. Texas' rate is up from 6.6 percent in April, the monthly TWC report said.

Riverwalk Plaza Hotel saved from foreclosure

Story here:
I just thought it was interesting. I was in that riverwalk area by the Morris Apts. and thought how great that building would be as a conversion.
