They advertised summer 2013. Well, today is summer, where is it???
I'm also curious about this. The Ground Breaking was ceremonial. But when will work actually begin?

From experience, from the next day to a couple of months later. It depends how well the general contractor and the trades for the early portion of construction are mobilized. I was on project where "Notice to Proceed" to the general contractor and building permits were issued after the ceremonial ground breaking.

They meant "San Francisco summer 2013", so it'll be October or even November

that may be no joke! here was socketsite today:

While approved for development, the permit to construct the 61-story tower which was applied for in March has yet to be issued. But with the fire department having signed-off on the plans this week, it shouldn't be too much longer before the construction crew can start setting up camp and moving the dirt with more than gold shovels.

I think it is so odd that there have been no lawsuits to block the construction of this tower. The NIMBYs have been very quiet on this, yet they are incredibly worked up over the midrise on the Washington st. waterfront. I wonder why that is, the plans for this tower seem to have proceeded so much more smoothly than I expected.

Because 8 Washington is in the NIMBY stronghold part of the city. It slightly affects the views of some of the "telegraph hill dwellers", who are a bunch of extra NIMBY-ish wealthy people that hate change. The Transbay tower is too far away and hidden from their domain to be of much concern to them. Despite cases like 8 Washington, I think the lack of NIMBY opposition towards all the new Transbay/Rincon hill towers proves that NIMBYism is not quite as strong in SF as it used to be.

I remember reading a few years ago that the NIMBY queen Sue Hestor was against the Transbay tower and wanted to stop it (of course), but I haven't heard any NIMBY stuff since, from her or anyone else. Maybe they were paid off.

Ironically, Sue Hestor's office, located in the Flood Building, shades the nearby public plaza (cable car turnaround). You can't make this stuff up.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb.

"No shadows on anything, and no blocked views for anyone!!!! Unless it's my own building that's casting the shadows and blocking the views, then it's OK."

What an amazing skyscraper! Can't wait to see it under construction. What is the estimated completion date?

I've never seen the banner.. so it was exciting to finally see, after 5+ years of planning, something concrete as proof this thing will finally be built soon!

^^^Sorry to bust your bubble, it's been up for a couple of months. No visible progress...plus, to be candid, with a project of this stature the barricade will be high end. If a high end barricade goes up, stuff's happening.

Meanwhile an awesome rendering has been released and was on the SFist a day ago

Video: Fly Over San Francisco In The Not-So-Distant Future

By Andrew Dalton

Quote:

As San Francisco hurtles towards a new, high-altitude future, creative agency Steelblue has created this futuristic flyover video showing the roughly 25 projects that will soon be changing the skyline and street level in eastern SoMa over the next five years or so.
While many of the towers going up in SoMa are still a few years off (the flagship Transbay Tower isn't expected to be finished until 2017), and a few of them are still missing from this rendering, the video is an excellent look at what San Francisco could look like circa 2020. Observe:

Kick-ass video!

As the years go by and the projects have been fleshed out more, we now know what most of the new towers will look like and it's easier to see how all the different parts are going to be combined.

Hong Kong Awesome in SF

Awesome, cheers to SF forumers you guys are going to have a lot of fun in the next few years. Transbay is a HK type development, would love for Chicago to get something similar for a West Loop Transit Center.
