Birmingham Diagram Building Boom!!!

in the past 2 days, 4 buildings have gone up on the diagram.

Watts and Empire Buildings - by me

Financial Center and Alabama Power Headquarters - by Ben M.

and Alabama Power Company went up recently, too, along with a tower, by Birdy.

good work everyone. eventually we'll have everything up, including all the highrises in Highland Park, and the high and mid-rises in the suburbs. and if that one guy ever scans those proposals, there'll be cancelled Birmingham towers.

if i get time (or really need something to do in the next week to get away from work) i'll work on 2121 and Commerce Center, maybe that big brick thing on the east side of downtown. maybe a new Cabana, too, for olde tyme fun (i want that big "C" on a diagram.) there are plenty of buildings to do.

I did the entire Alabama Power headquarters complex (3 connected buildings) about 2-3 years ago and tried to get them added to the diagram, but at that time, I believe Dylan would not allow a building to be added if the official height was not known. Anyway, here's my old rendering (drawn at two times the scale used in the diagram section) of the Alabama Power headquarters complex inlcuding (from left to right) the original art deco tower from the 1920's, the short 1950's addition, and the taller tower added around 1990 (the latter two connected by an atrium covered by a sloping glass roof):

However, the old and new towers really deserve to appear separately on the diagram, so I split them up and included the short 1950's addition with the newer tower since the glass atrium needed something to anchor it on the left:

____________

Looking at Birdy's version of the older Alabama Power Bldg, I do agree that if drawn alone without the other attached buildings, it might be better to show the wider side. However, his version is much wider than it should be (I thought he had left off the lower floors when I first looked at it). Mine also needs improvement because my skills at creating renderings has improved since these drawings were done (I perfected my skills while working on Atlanta's tallest buildings).

At the same time I worked on the above renderings, I also drew the Regions Bldg, Financial Center, and Galleria Office Tower. The Regions Bldg is hard to replicate because the color of the metal and glass looks different nearly everytime I photograph it (sometimes it looks almost black...other times it looks brownish with a slight bronze tint). Justin your version looks pretty good. You managed to capture the colors better than my attempt 2-3 years ago. Ben M's Financial Center looks much better than mine (except he forgot the small mechanical floor on the roof), so I won't bother posting it. Anyway, here is my old rendering of the Galleria Office Tower which isn't on the diagram (unless it is listed for Hoover instead...I didn't check). The glass needs definitely needs some work:

Speaking of renderings, I just completed my renderings of a new tallest building for Birmingham that I designed. It's actually a refinement of a skyscraper design that I created about 3 years ago--a modern art deco tower with lots of setbacks. I am so eager to post the renderings (and they're quite large so that you can really see the details) here in the forum, but I am seriously concerned about the possibility of some architect or developer browsing the forum, seeing my renderings, and stealing my idea. No, I'm not being narcissistic, but this is the greatest building I've ever designed and something that would make Birmingham's skyline one to be reckoned with (not only because of the height, but the creative, unique design of the building...at least IMO). Does anyone know how to copyright an image or any type of building design to avoid having an idea ripped off after posting it on the internet?

I'm afraid ideas can't be copyrighted, but images can. If you place a watrermark or even just a copyright and your name somewhere on the photo, it makes it copyright. It's intellectual property and cannot be used without permission from you.

Yeah, I've heard that but wasn't sure if that was a fact. I'll take your word on it (and sue you for bad legal advice later if necessary...LOL...JUST KIDDING!!!) and post the renderings in a separate thread later tonight. I was trying to add a banner at the bottom of my renderings with the image title followed by ©Randy Sandford, but the graphics programs on the computer I'm presently using here at work are not cooperating with me. So, I'll add the copyright and post them later this evening.

All the other buildings you did in this thread have some type of way to enter the building. But this one.

That's because the doors are recessed between the masonry columns that extend from the ground to the roof. This photo sort of illustrates what I'm talking about:
