Nice find someone123. Halifax is fortunate to have so many interesting, scenic neighbourhoods.

I was speaking with someone from Killiam at Southport during open doors and they said the final designs (ie material choices) are still being hashed out. The penthouse and roof structure will be a glazed crown similar to the top of Founders Square.

Interestingly, when I visited Government House for Doors Open Halifax, one of the points mentioned by the tour guide was that once the Alexander is finished, it will be the first time since it was built in 1805, that Government House won't have a view of the harbour.

HRM has an application page up for non-substantive amendments to this DA: http://www.halifax.ca/planning/Appli...312Details.php

The application package includes elevation drawings and a couple of 3D renderings.

Here are some of the images:

It's not entirely clear from the rendering but the document points out that the grey stone at street level on the new building is going to be ironstone to match the brewery.

And fingers crossed that the siding to the left of it is not vinyl

It will is labelled: "WOOD-LOOK CORNER ELEMENT C/W COMMERCIAL ENTRANCE SYSTEM"

So I guess that wood panelling stuff.

The white non-window portions on the upper levels are supposed to be metal spandrel, which is not as nice as glass curtain wall but I guess better than precast concrete panels.

The dark brick on the upper podium levels is nice, and probably having glass and spandrel go down to the third floor.

It seems fairly decent overall. A few years ago it would have been well above average for the city.

If it's the same wood paneling they used in the renovations of those eyesore apartments on Brunswick then I have very little hope for this building. Disgusting.

If it's just some kind of veneer, meh, they shouldn't bother, but if it's real ironstone, that's a nice touch.

Salter's Gate has stone on the lower floors and what look like precast concrete lintels over the windows. The effect there is actually pretty good, although the overall design of the building and the ventilation grates, etc. detract from the look.

Another problem with Salter's Gate is that the covered ground floor is set too low and is too small. The decorated roof element is too small as well. Bishop's Landing is similar. It is a bit hard to tell from the renderings but the Alexander doesn't seem to have the same design problems. Salter's would have been so much better had the ground floor up around Hollis Street been more inviting to pedestrians walking by; as it is it feels like a private space. Maybe that was intentional but it's the wrong way to go. It's hard to even tell what businesses are in that building or where the entrances are.

I am all for elements like arcades and awnings (particularly nicer glass ones that let light through) and I think they're a good fit for the city's climate, but if they're done on the cheap or implemented poorly they're often worse than not having them in the first place.

I've looked at the renderings quite a few times now, and regarding the wood/glass structure on the corner, I still can't resolve that it seems incongruous with the rest of the structure, and not in a pleasant way.

Hopefully it'll look better in person than it does on paper... errr... video screen.
