Would this not block the iconic view of the ESB from downtown? And it seems there's going to be blank walls on both sides of the tower.

Yikes at this whole thing really. Looks awful.

It won't block the view of the ESB because its so thin and directly on Fifth, while the ESB has a multi-stepped back profile. But a blank wall is a no-no. Especially because it will be so visible.

And who's going to want to pay those prices with no views on either side? That little cut to the east won't cut it.

If only we could have gotten SHoP on this. They know how to do New York.

It could be good, but if we really do end up with a 1000ft blank wall right next to the ESB, I think it would be safe to call this one of the most wretched pieces of shit in NYC, considerably worse than the PVC pipe crowned tower with a giant blank wall in Downtown. I wish they would give us different angles to look at so I would have an easier time deciding wether I like this or complain for the next few years because there are some things this tower will clearly contribute to the skyline, like it's innovative crown.

Even if we do end up with a 1000ft blank wall, thank god it will be prominent for only a few years until this tower gets swallowed up by the unstoppable southward expansion of the Midtown skyline.

They need some bad publicity to reconsider this design. I'll take a boring, blue glass wall over a blank one anytime.

I like it. Fits in that part of Manhattan quite well.

And the blank wall won't be obvious; there will be towers blocking that view. There's a near-supertall going up immediately to the west, so why would they put windows if they would be blocked?

And the rendering isn't showing all the other planned towers along/around lower Fifth Ave. so the context will be quite different once built.

This looks like an updated version of the old 80 South Street design.

They can do better.

Also, will there be a three sided view aside from the wall on the Northwest corner? If so, it won't look that bad.

Never an excuse for a blank wall. Both 3 MW and 220 CPS have shown how this can be done, even as tallwr towers will obscure. And 1,000 ft of virtual nothing should never be justified, certainly not in New York, and not on 5th Avenue.

^ They still refuse to show us the 5th Avenue facade. That could make it better or break it further, but it's not looking good.

Anyway, here's another profile from the north...

http://meganom.moscow/project/262-fifth/

Quote:
The idea that implicitly moves the project is aeronautics, putting people on viewing platforms – "shelves" in the air, from which the city is seen. As we move upwards, reaching 1,001 feet, we are moving vertically into space. The spatial scheme attaches floors to a backbone, which maintains and sustains the modules. The floors are structurally supported by the core and two walls, stretching parallel to Fifth Avenue, along the long axis of the Island.

The core is pushed out and isolated, while serving the residences and housing all the engineering and logistics. The spine is separate from the body in order to achieve the unobstructed volume of the apartments and providing the ability to keep the open spaces inside the residences with panoramic views. The optimal apartment plan with clear span and without vertical communications has been defined for the residence. The interiors become clean, flexible and open.

An apartment is always keeping the potential of the void. It is a shelter, experience of a room above the city. It is a void with high ceilings, constrained by two walls and two panoramic window walls. The view and its perspective reveal all of Manhattan: a 180-degree view in Northern and Southern directions.

The rooftop open room can be reserved for private events by the residents and becomes a unique amenity, with a striking view atop the skyscraper.

They should split the that east facade shear wall into columns and keep the sheer strength with cross-bracing. That way they open it up for glass and it will look much more appealing than endless ugly little circles.

Circles are ugly but cross bracing is good looking?
You should become a starchitect!

Huh? 425 Park can only be considered a preservation in the most technical sense of the word. The finished product will look nothing like the original building. I don't see anything wrong with this in that case, but it doesn't seem to be a good example of preservation you say you're looking for.

Maybe it is a little architect-y but I love cross bracing - ha. Richard Rogers style FTW!

The wall is obviously structural and it's being used for shear strengthening. I just think doing what I said would open it up a bit. That line of circles going up the facade looks strange. If they show it from that side you will see!

The walls at 111 W. 57th are structural, but the came out a whole lot nicer, at least from what we've seen....

Add this one to the render...

Billionaire Developer Plans 1,001-Foot High Skyline Viewing Machine for NoMad
June 2, 2017
Quote:
Earlier this week, Five Points Development via Dezeen unveiled renderings of 262 Fifth Avenue, a 1,001-foot-tall skyscraper planned for the corner of Fifth Avenue and 29th Street in NoMad. The tower will be the first from the newly-formed development company led by Israeli-billionaire Boris Kuzinez. The three-building site was quietly assembled over the last two years and building permits filed in September detailing a 54-floor residential tower with SLCE as the executive architects.

According to the recent press release, Moscow-based, Meganom, are the tower’s design architects. Released renderings show an unapologetically modern building sheathed in aluminum and glass. The high-ceilinged residential floors will have open window walls to the south and north, and will have an east-facing wall perforated by wide porthole windows. The residences will be flanked by a windowless core to the west and a dramatic arched metal frame will crown the building and enclose a communal observation deck.

More info on the project & renderings HERE.

There is a grotesque level of apathy by most toward the loss of some on the most classic new York skyline views that are being lost. Most of these towers completely ablate the public's view (of millions of people) of these majestic buildings so that a handful of millionaires can have exclusive close-up view.

Watching the classic skyline being walled off it makes me sick as a native New Yorker.
