^... it depends how creative they get with a spire on the potential building. All the tall buildings in Winnipeg have flat roofs, so it could be done that way...

the spire would be taller than the rest of the building

where did the "new tallest" come from?

Out of these possibilities, I am praying that it will be proposal #1, with emphasis on the +.

Tallest building

I would love to see it happen.. i.e a tower 10 stories or a 120 feet taller than TD(CanWest) tower. But will it really happen?
Proof, I want someone to bet their life on it that this will happen Who is the architrect working on it that writes on this forum?

Can a building be that high due to the underground water. Can they dig that deep?

theres a layer salt water between the bedrock and the clay...

if you leave a cuple feet of clay you don't get the gushing water..

one end of the city the bed rock is 10feet down and the other end its 50feet or so down.. downtown is like 20feet or so........... from what i have been told by some contractors doing work at the shell terminal back in december

haha! i can't help but think that you're editorializing a little bit! number 2 sounds kind of exciting to me, the retail and market/park in particular.

Only because I know more about #2. I have not seen the tower, so sight unseen fails to get me excited, especially because I know the developer has never done anything this large before ... whoops, said too much.

As long as the new condo tower (proposal #1) is taller than Hydro but shorter than CanWest ...I wouldn't want anything to disrupt our skywall .

I'd be very pleased with number one or number two ...just whatever it is, don't leave it the way it is ...in all honesty it would make for a crappy park. Regardless of how good it is, the Forks is right next door. If we're thinking park, lets consider our river walk somewhere along the lines of what was done in San Antonio. In my opinion, that is outstanding. Portage Avenue and Main Street are not streets for parks (at least not in the CBD). They are the recognizeable "big city, business" roads that we have.

As a sports enthusiast, I still hold hope that a training facility may be the grace of any proposal for brownfield development in St.B. There is a mass shortage of soccer pitches, basketball courts, regulation handball courts, etc., etc. in this city.

Anyways, I will continue to sit and wait.

1ajs is right - the whole "living on a swamp" thing for WInnipeg is kind of an urban myth. There is bedrock under there - more than enough to build high.

Sounds like it is 3 they are considering ... not all that were submitted may be in the mix of 3.

I believe #1 was approx 38 storeys. I don't imagine it would be tallest by much but...It definately towers above Ft Garry Place.

1. Hopefully it is not 4 levels of above ground parking. I have yet to see a condo tower with above ground parking that actually looks good.

2. Probably the best use of the space. I question though how many will make use of the indoor market or retail space that dont live in the building. Its a nice idea, I just dont think the area has enough foot traffic to make the retailers successful.

3. If this happens, Winnipeg is dead. The LAST thing the city needs is another park for bums to sleep in and scare everyone else away from.

Above all else. Hopefully it isnt a Winnipeg architect that designs it. I have yet to see a tower designed by a Winnipeg architect that didnt look cheap or remind me of cold war communist Russia.

Chateau 100 is an ugly white concrete box from the 70s. Another one would not be an improvement to the skyline and above ground open-air parkades do little for the street level esthetics either.
