River Walk hotel proposed for Solo Serve and surrounding buildings
Posted on April 13, 2015 | BY BENJAMIN OLIVO

The owners of prime River Walk property appear to be teaming up with a Dallas developer for a 252-room AC Hotel by Marriott that would be built on the former Solo Serve building and its surrounding buildings.

The proposal calls for lots of demolition, but also the saving of many of the stone facades.

Owned by Service Lloyds Insurance Co. of Austin, the properties — 114, 130 and 134 Soledad St.; 140 E. Houston St. — have sat mostly vacant and decaying along Soledad Street between Houston and Commerce. The Book Building, which faces Houston Street, is the structure in this proposal that has had some tenant life.

The plan is for 12 levels of hotel rooms (the main entrance from the Book Building) and eight levels of above-ground parking accessible from Soledad Street. Also, retail space at both street and River Walk levels.

Cancelled

Plans for 21-story River Walk hotel cancelled

Quote:
Dallas developer Woodbine Development Corp. has canceled plans to demolish the old Solo Serve store and other landmark buildings along the River Walk for a 21-story AC Hotel by Marriott.

“Unfortunately, our capital partner was not comfortable with the market dynamics in San Antonio,” said T. Dupree Scovell, managing director at Woodbine, in a phone interview.

I don't understand the comment about the market dynamics in S.A. not being good for a new hotel.
