When my father went to UT in the last 1920s he often canoed up Lake Austin and picnicked with a windup Victrola and presumably a (girl)friend or two. He spoke of once being surprised by a squall that was hidden by some cliffs until it was upon them. I was never sure exactly where it was, but I've always supposed it was near where the Pennybacker bridge is now. He would have liked that picture. Oh, he was a professional photographer, too.

I'll bet the national media picks up on that SRV statue image, if they haven't already. It's the perfect image for "flood in Austin".

This is definitely not Austin, but you gotta see this. Watch it full screen and don't forget the sound.

I'm sure Portland is a nice place to visit, in the summer, if you had a reason, like business or family there, but I sure as hell wouldn't leave Austin to live there. With a population of just over 600k, and a state population of just under 4 million, I don't see Oregon as a migration magnate, but it is growing at just over 3% per year. And it does seem to have a similar vibe.
Maybe their #1 ranking will help divert some of the people planning on moving here.

Portland's metropolitan area is much more dense than Austin's and is substantially larger (2.3 million) with a much better public transportation system and a really awesome downtown (even if it lacks a skyline). I have family there and totally understand why they left. Austin is great, but so is Portland.

You can see the One American Center under construction here. This must have been from late 1983 since Lavaca Plaza is complete.

The Shore and Austin Skyhouse just barely show up here.

You can see the crane for the Colorado Tower in front of the Bank of America Center. Unfortunately some of the buildings at Green are going to block the view of the Capitol from this spot.

The Bowie isn't showing up yet, and I don't think IBC Bank Plaza will at all. It's a little too short. You can see the crane for it just to the left of 360. 7th & Rio Grande should show up here.
