oldstuff, the photograph was taken in 1909. It appeared in the Los Angeles Herald in September of that year. (link below)

And CBD might be right, the Fauntleroys could be wearing ersatz sailor suits.

I was going to say--the big-bow/bloomers/black stocking look for girls had definitely faded by the '20s, at least among the faster chicks...as for the military-school possibility, perhaps the boys went to Harvard...seen here in this 1911 view we've seen on NLA before (that is, according to Google, which places it on page 488...which sometimes means 488 pages from the latest page...but anyway, couldn't find the post!).

the two boys on the bench that day in St. James Park were wearing military uniforms.

Yes, the two boys on the bench could very easily be students at the military school. That makes more sense. The different scarves might indicate their school rank. One also appears to have a chevron on his upper sleeve. Oh, so many mysteries.

I notice that the toilets of the school are light, airy and as good as the downtown Alexandria hotel. They even have marble ....wow...class all the way. A lot of talk about the blackboards but not a word about the quality of food in the dining hall.

We've seen the "wrecked" Rhoda-spelled-backward milk truck before...the bumper seems to barely touch the palm, though I suppose the crates might have fallen out when it hit the curb--which, by the way, is still there. The quatrefoil-design parkings (I grew up calling them "neutral grounds") of the St James Park subdivision are now 129 years old.... So the driver is squatting down picking up shards of glass piece by piece? Staged much?


Anyway, here's the scene of the devastation--we are at the intersection of what are today designated St James Place and (oddly) St James Park West, looking north-slightly-nothwesterly. Through the truck window you can see the Stearns-Dockweiler house at 27 St. James Park, which the family had built in 1900. Julia Stearns Dockweiler was still living there when the milkman ran amok, and she would own the house all the way until 1990. Curbing, house, lady--ancient Los Angeles relics all.

In the 1909 pic I see a small gable within a larger gable.



& the left side of the roof looks different to me. (the roof is angled down toward the street)...with rectangular (horizontal) dormers.

of course, that's just my opinion.

You're right--doesn't match. I realize now that the house is on Western Ave, not Oxford. How about 1700 S Western? (The blue circle--the red is 1710 S Oxford.)

oops. I wasn't even close with my choice, was I? I had forgotten the academy was on the west side of Western Avenue

So you're going by the large building on the academy grounds. I think 1700 S. Western is a good choice. (there's a Winchell's in that spot now)

I did a quick look for a possible image of 1700 in the LAT or LAH--no dice. Hoped that maybe it had been moved--possibly even to the nwc of Cambridge & Oxford--doesn't seem so.

It's located on the 1800 block of S. Manhattan Place.
