oldstuff, the photograph was taken in 1909. It appeared in the Los Angeles Herald in September of that year. (link below)

Los Angeles Herald-September 12, 1909.

After Earl's post I'm leaning toward military school uniforms for the two boys book-ending the Fauntleroys..

And CBD might be right, the Fauntleroys could be wearing ersatz sailor suits.

I just noticed the two boy's neck scarves are different. (one's light...one's dark)

Plus, I think the 'ersatz' sailor on the right might possibly be a girl. (was anyone else thing that?)

They could be fraternal twins I guess.

I was going to say--the big-bow/bloomers/black stocking look for girls had definitely faded by the '20s, at least among the faster chicks...as for the military-school possibility, perhaps the boys went to Harvard...seen here in this 1911 view we've seen on NLA before (that is, according to Google, which places it on page 488...which sometimes means 488 pages from the latest page...but anyway, couldn't find the post!).

It's good to see that photograph again GW.

I hadn't noticed the writing on the small building before.

detail

I believe it says 'Harvard Training Ground'. (I was hoping for something a little more provocative...like...say...'cadet whipping room' )

And here's an article from 1909, the same year as the St. James Park 'children on a bench' photograph. (the pic that started this conversation)

California Digital Newspaper Collection

Unfortunately...the two photographs (GW's and this one) show the cadets in dress uniform, so they bring us no closer to knowing whether or not

the two boys on the bench that day in St. James Park were wearing military uniforms.

Yes, the two boys on the bench could very easily be students at the military school. That makes more sense. The different scarves might indicate their school rank. One also appears to have a chevron on his upper sleeve. Oh, so many mysteries.

I notice that the toilets of the school are light, airy and as good as the downtown Alexandria hotel. They even have marble ....wow...class all the way. A lot of talk about the blackboards but not a word about the quality of food in the dining hall.

Here are some Harvard Academy boys wearing the dark shirts we see in the bench photo....1912.

Accident in St. James Park, 1951.

los angeles public library

"A driver of an Adohr milk truck picking up pieces of glass milk bottles that shattered in the street after his delivery van
hit the palm tree seen on the left. The accident occurred in the middle of St. James Park."

No doubt caused by all the bustling traffic in St. James Park. [snark]

Thanks for the information on the proposed St. James Court Apts. GW. I appreciate it.

...I'm not convinced either. There's a lot of unanswered questions about this bench photo.

The milk accident made me think of this scene from 'The Girl Can't Help It'. (1956)

Tyrone Power and his wife, Linda Christian, in an unnamed restaurant. 1950s?

ebay (from a long time ago)

ebay

makes me wonder if Mr. Power invested in an restaurant sometime in the late 1950s? (he died in 1958)

It just seems strange....that they're posing in an empty restaurant. (and Linda appears to be quite over it)
__

also....I'm not sure that is Linda Christian. (i didn't think she was that thin)

We've seen the "wrecked" Rhoda-spelled-backward milk truck before...the bumper seems to barely touch the palm, though I suppose the crates might have fallen out when it hit the curb--which, by the way, is still there. The quatrefoil-design parkings (I grew up calling them "neutral grounds") of the St James Park subdivision are now 129 years old.... So the driver is squatting down picking up shards of glass piece by piece? Staged much?

Anyway, here's the scene of the devastation--we are at the intersection of what are today designated St James Place and (oddly) St James Park West, looking north-slightly-nothwesterly. Through the truck window you can see the Stearns-Dockweiler house at 27 St. James Park, which the family had built in 1900. Julia Stearns Dockweiler was still living there when the milkman ran amok, and she would own the house all the way until 1990. Curbing, house, lady--ancient Los Angeles relics all.

GW, I can't believe you found the exact spot. lol

Harvard Military Academy (again)

Remember this pic from yesterday?

I believe I might have found the large house in the distance.

But there's one problem: I don't see Oxford Ave. in the 1909 photo. (I see an unbroken curb)

detail

So now I'm not 100% sure this is the right house.

Do you think this is the same house?

Here's an aerial to get your bearings.

The street running north and south next to the house is Oxford Ave.

The larger intersection at lower left is Western Ave. and Venice Blvd.

Well, ER, I'm not sure which house that is, the grey one on the corner...I think that the house in the vintage Harvard pic is 1710 S Oxford:

Are you sure GW?

In the 1909 pic I see a small gable within a larger gable.

& the left side of the roof looks different to me. (the roof is angled down toward the street)...with rectangular (horizontal) dormers.

of course, that's just my opinion.

You're right--doesn't match. I realize now that the house is on Western Ave, not Oxford. How about 1700 S Western? (The blue circle--the red is 1710 S Oxford.)

oops. I wasn't even close with my choice, was I? I had forgotten the academy was on the west side of Western Avenue

So you're going by the large building on the academy grounds. I think 1700 S. Western is a good choice. (there's a Winchell's in that spot now)

I did a quick look for a possible image of 1700 in the LAT or LAH--no dice. Hoped that maybe it had been moved--possibly even to the nwc of Cambridge & Oxford--doesn't seem so.

Glad you checked the moving records GW. I didn't think of that possibility.

I happened to notice another house nearby that matches 1700 S. Western Ave.

It's located on the 1800 block of S. Manhattan Place.

gsv

but....there is a difference. The chimney is on the opposite side of the house. (oh.....and the porch) -nevermind

nice van.

In case anyone's interested, here's it's proximity to 1700 S. Western (circled in blue)

google_earth

OK, I'm done
