......The other unusual feature of 53W53’s diagrid is what it is made of. Nouvel’s original design was intended to be built in steel. But the floor-to-floor heights of a steel structure would have limited the number of storeys too much, so WSP | Parsons Brinckerhof investigated how to create the same aesthetic in concrete instead – “the first time that a diagrid structure of this magnitude and complexity has been done in concrete,” notes Oliveira.

Aside from the complex structural gymnastics, the team also spent considerable time evaluating how 53W53 could actually be delivered. Because of its complexity, construction will take more than five years, around double the programme for a more conventional design. One of the biggest challenges was designing the nodes where different structural components would join. Reinforcement for perhaps seven or eight elements had to fit into the same node, and then the concrete had to be able to flow freely to enclose it and produce a sound structure.

Oliveira’s team worked closely not only with the architect but the construction team, which included commissioning a mock-up of the rebar. “Rather than just coming up with solutions that looked good on paper, we assessed the constructability of the job too. That’s not normally part of the engineer’s role but this is such a unique building, it needed a unique approach.”
Very interesting, NYGuy - Thanks.

Just creating the concrete forms around the structural steel and supporting the weight, is an engineering feat in an of itself.

^ There's always room for a skyscraper in New York.

Great photos!!! This is an icon in the making. When the facade/cladding goes on, this will be beautiful. The initial focus was on the loss of 200 feet or so, but when this is finished it will still stand out for its impressive design. Some of the older towers (CB, Pine, etc) will be covered by the higher new construction, but the angles of the city provide great views of the iconic buildings from different vantage points. That 200 ft used to bother me, now I am just happy we get to see this rise. This one and Steinway will be instant classics.

Even at the planned 1,250 ft, it would have been shorter than a host of supertalls now going up in Manhattan. I just regret that we lost an extra 200 ft of shine for an arbitrary reason. It will still dazzle though.

I would not want to live here if I could afford it because then you'd never get to see this building in the skyline. I'd rather live in an apartment in 432 Park Place facing this beauty so I could see it everyday in all of its glory. On another note, its crazy that this thread is over 9 years old. Its taken forever and I know it will be worth the long wait.

Whoa! So from those of you on the ground, what material are they using against the columns? It's hard to tell from just the pictures if it's stone, metal, or stained concrete.

^ That might be some kind of Nouvel trick, Cole. It wouldn't be the first time he would astonish us by calling on some concrete experts and craftsmen.

Concrete was so painful from the 1950s to 70s that they can do some surprisingly artsy things of it today. It's absolutely surprising and enchanting. Nowadays, they speak of "design", even in the French language. The term of so-called "art" is somewhat old-fashioned and feels snooty, pompous to the latest generation. For now, to the least.
