Probably a view of the Gastown area, which was the whole city at the time, from the harbour or from Stanley Park.

Before there was Toronto the Good, there was Toronto the Brown.

This picture was taken at roughly the same timeframe (early 1950s), and gives some detail of the area immediately behind Toronto Harbour that the other picture cuts off.

It's interesting that so much of that area was unused. Maybe the port had already begun its decline?

I wonder if that dirty picture of Toronto was taken after a period without much rainfall... Surely a good downpour would have washed away most of the soot?

Sault Ste. Marie city hall under construction in 1973.

The building is 97,000 square feet and cost 4.3 million to build. The building uses gold tinted mirror glass and brown porcelain steel panels.
It was completed in December 1974.

This used to be the site of the ferry terminal to take passenger for Ontario to Michigan. With the completion of the International bridge in 1962, the terminal was no longer in use shortly there after and the land sat vacant until construction started on the city hall. All that remains today of the ferry terminal area is the cut out of land where the ferry used to dock on the east side of city hall.

I always liked Beaver Hall Hill. It's a porky little cross-section of 20th century Montreal.

I remember the buildings being stained black as a small kid in the early 1980s. Makes me wonder if the lack of appreciation in the 1960s and 1970s was partly because you couldn't see the details.

That black coating was not unique to Toronto - thank the coal age with dirty autos tacked on. It is interesting to note that after cleaning, these buildings no longer blacken with time - we breath a much better quality air pollution these days!
