There is currently scaffolding on the north side along St. Mary Ave. so stuff is still slowly happening. Noticed the Winnipeg Inn's big sign is off that building now as well. Either it blew off in that wind storm or something else is happening behind the scenes *fingers crossed*

It was taken down a few weeks ago.

David Steinberg tours Winnipeg in 1971.

Some interesting shots of the River Rouge and the North End. If you can get past the lame jokes, it's not a bad video.

^ Good find!

Incidentally, man, has humour changed since the 70s.

I don't think I have ever seen a photo of the observation deck in its open-air days. Does anyone remember when it closed prior to reopening again in the 90s?
Well how about that... not long after I made that comment a photo of the open-air era observation deck turned up online.

I don't think that would have been very funny in the 70s either - IMO.

I think its more that the quality of our comedian talent has just increased.

^ What's really funny is that guy was (apparently, according to his Wikipedia article) one of the best known comedians of the 60s and 70s. Even directed Seinfeld episodes, among other sitcoms. A comedy legend right here from Winnipeg.

Somehow CBC did not bring out the best in him

He used to be on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from time to time as I recall. He was really funny in that setting.

Image Credit: Winnipeg Free Press, Aug. 21, 1970

This was the original design of Lakeview Square, ca. 1970. The project wasn't complete until 1974.

I was 4 yrs. old in '70 so I wasn't really aware of this project until after it was completed.

I want to see the original newspaper articles of the announcement. I don't know what year/date to look at.

There is an interesting article on page B1 of today's Free Press about a stately old home in Crescentwood that a young couple purchased and promptly demolished to make way for a new home. The neighbors, it seems, are outraged.

The issue here is what everyone's reasonable expectations should be regarding heritage protection in these old residential areas. My impression is that these homes weren't really built to last 100+ years... Unless someone has poured an incredible amount of money into theirs, chances are that they are filled with problems.

If you want these central neighborhoods like Crescentwood and Armstrong's Point to remain thriving, desirable places to live, you're going to have to let people replace homes that are typically over a century old with something modern. It's a normal part of the revitalization process.

^Interesting read. While I can sympathize with the concerns of the neighbours and their sense of loss, the comments made by the "trained architect" neighbour are over the top. Normal people shouldn't live in Crescentwood? Wow.

If I'm not mistaken, there are already some newer, modern looking houses along Ruskin Row by Peanut Park. As long as the houses conform to the zoning restrictions of the neighbourhood, I can't see the harm. Also, I can't imagine dropping 600K on a house just to demo and rebuilt. That is a sign of a highly desirable neighbourhood!

^ What a phenomenal find... That video is an interesting little time capsule. Everything has changed, yet nothing has changed.

So was the planned-but-not-built second tour meant to go north of the current tower, where the surface lot is? It looked from the renderings like it was going to be built just to the west of the current tower, which I can't quite figure out.

It was planned for the west side, where the current plaza and big TV are.

Interesting video. Good find! I didn't realize there was a second phase for the project.

Was any foundation work done for the second tower, I wonder? Does the concourse extend under the plaza where the second tower was planned?

Maybe after 40 years have passed they will finally get to work on phase two, just like Trizac.

The second tower would have had a dramatic impact on the skyline at P&M
