In an attempt to electrify Caltrain near its original time frame, the JPB has decided to split the project into smaller pieces. Thus they can start with secured financing while working to finalize the remainder. The first package out to bid later this month incorporates necessary foundation work and represents approximately 10% of the total project.

Question:

I'm sure nothing is this simple but in essence couldn't the city more than fund the tunnel dig for HSR by eliminating 280 from Mariposa St heading north and selling the development rights of this large swath of land? Especially if they allow for some serious height in that development considering shadow effects would be minimal to parks in this part of the city. The 4th and King street rail yard alone is massive.

^John Burton is still around? Talk about a relic!
It's an interesting design I think I've seen on a roll of Charmin. Not in a bad way, I do like it, but like others have stated, it is probably going to get very sooty very soon. Are they going to be cleaning out every little crevice with a wire brush?
I'm looking forward to designs of the park and hope they keep that cool fountain that was originally planned.

Can't wait for the day someone calls you an old relic. Oh it will happen.

Anyhoo I think a lot people are thinking "How are they going keep this thing clean?" Has that ever been asked or explained?

An annual power wash should be enough. If worse comes to worst it can be repainted with spray paint. There is too much pessimism about this project, the Transbay Center is a wonderful addition to SF. I believe the next step is to join about 16 of those grids to see what it looks like when joined.

I'm not a SanFranciscan and I don't frequent this thread very often. I've been wondering, did they officially rename it the Transbay Transit Center or is it still known as Transbay Terminal, which is so much better?

relic | 'relik | an object surviving from an earlier time, especially one of historical or sentimental interest

I'll take it.

though I never called anybody an "old relic."

I'm not pessimistic about project. But I was never wild about the multi-block "Chinese Wall" design. But yeah we'll just have an wait to see what it actually looks like before passing judgement. It's been so long I've forgotten if the perforated design means that the center is going to be essentially "open-air?"

It looks to me like the bus deck is open air and the street level concourse is in glass. There is also glass encasing the center parts to protect the concourse. If all goes well, the facade will still block wind on the bus level.

^^^ Thanks. That explains it nicely. I've never seen that cross-section before, or at least that large. Now it totally makes more sense to me.
