The unions are not that strong here. (With the exception of the Elevator trade and some of the M/E/P trades.)

Most contractors do have some holidays during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. But this is usually only a day or two. Even so, many people take vacation during this time of year, so productivity is down.

However, the main reason not to start a project now is that you are starting the phase of work (sitework, foundations, slabs, structure) that is most susceptible to weather during the wettest, coldest time of year.

That said, "breaking ground" can just mean digging a hole in the ground with a shovel, with no other activity occurring for several months after that (see Opus for example).

So, given the source and taking the aforementioned facts into consideration, a technical groundbreaking this month is definitely plausible, but I would take their information with a grain of salt and not hold my breath for any significant construction until the next year.
FWIW the architect told me last summer that he was "extremely confident" of an October groundbreaking and was treating it as a foregone conclusion. I'm not sure what caused the current delay, but keep in mind that MetLife is self financing this so the biggest hurdle is already cleared. This has to be by far the most likely of any of the "proposed" projects in the hopper to move forward.

I'd say Norfolk Southern is first. I'm very confident that will start construction next year.

Yep, you can see it being developed in some of the renderings on the first page of this thread.

That seems to be the plan. Midtown will have two office/hotel/residential projects going up at the same time.

I just realized that this angle has a view of the hotel.

And the ground level site plan. Looking at you Sprouts/TJ's/etc.

Nice addition with the sote plan! I hadn’t seen that yet. A grocery (but especially Sprouts) at this location would be a game changer for midtown. People who live around 5th or piedmont park would be pretty envious, IMO, even with the Whole Foods at 14th.

Not that I'm aware of. I thought I read something on who would be the apartment developer but I couldn't find it.

That's why it doesn't surprise me that this didn't break ground in the time frame they expected. Having to build residential and hotel at the same time as the office building is a LOT of moving parts to line up before beginning construction.

I wasn’t aware they had announced a ground breaking date.

I was referring to Atlswede's post above. There was also an earlier conversation about this breaking ground in December. I haven't seen anything official from MetLife.

I hope this isn't another Eviva or Opus Place type situation.

It's not. This is an office projected that is financed/backed by Anthem I think. Opus was based on pre-sales. Eviva had financing issues.

Midtown Union is actually self-funded by MetLife.

The Anthem tower is about 10 blocks south of Midtown Union.

I guess we're doomed to hear about Eviva every time a project doesn't break ground exactly as projected (which almost never happens).
