Even with good materials it's tacky. It's bad postmodern architecture. This is not modernism.

Sorry, that was a terminology slip. Since it is a push-pull of the traditional row house, post modernism is probably more apt -- in which case maybe the cheap materials facsimiles have some sort of witty subtext ala Stanley Tigerman (J/K).

I guess I just keep thinking that it could have been more like this, or a more contemporary take on it, even if it missed by a long shot.

Hey All, I thought I would post a few pictures of the Zapata Apartments at Armitage and St. Louis, since I live pretty close to there.

^ Thanks for posting.

Are there renderings floating around of the finished product here?

GEMS school at Lakeshore East

Article in last week's Chicago Journal about the planned school.

I need to say that I'm completely with those who really think this should be a public school. Greater downtown in my view definitely needs more public school slots. There's the current demand that isn't being met, and then there is the huge spike you would get in the form of supply-induced demand.....yes, there would be an actual "if you build it, they will come" effect here.....I think a very substantial one at that...

Interesting. Each residential segment of downtown is covered by an elementary... South Loop by South Loop, Near North by Ogden, and West Loop by Skinner. The only area that's lacking is Lakeshore East/Streeterville.

Downtown does not have a neighborhood high school, but there are numerous charter and magnet options. The new Jones will have 300 neighborhood slots, but I don't know how those will be awarded or how it interacts with the normal selection process. Fortunately, any parent comfortable with raising a child in the city should also be comfortable with their child using CTA to get to high school, so the need for a downtown neighborhood high school is not very pressing.

My friend just took this picture at a Chicago tourism shop. I know it's off topic, but it is too hilarious not to share. Two Trumps and a relocated Hancock!

^WTP too!

The drawback of that "real" view is the Hancock disappears. They really wanted to force it !

It looks like it is before it was completed. BCBS looks to be under construction as well.

That's the proposed 40 story tower that was part of the original plan for Roosevelt Collection. I thought that part of the project was dead

I'm actually concerned about there being too much fenestration. I think the south loop needs more blank walls. Who doesn't like a good solid wall to stare at. Totally makes my day.

A little cinder block, a bit of concrete...paint all that a nice, creamy beige and that'd just make my heart sing.

I'm really digging the design of this (plot o' park aside) -- the right choice of materials will really make it. There isn't really much going on down in that neck of the woods, if memory serves. I'm still waiting for something big to happen to that stretch of land between Ping Tom and Roosevelt. But alas, 'tis but a pipe dream.

Well, there will be structured parking as well. If the residential density of the area ever increases, Mariano's could dump the surface lot. Unfortunately this corner of the South Loop is hamstrung by railroad viaducts and industrial zoning, not to mention the massive parking lot of CPD.

Does anyone know anything about this?

The hotel at this address is currently the Hotel Sax I believe - if it is going to change to the Thompson Hotels group in the near future, it's a little odd that the Thompson Hotels website (http://www.thompsonhotels.com) talks about its first Chicago property as being a 2013 reflagging of the Sutton Place Hotel. Maybe they are being a bit slow in coordinating their web info or something. Either way, both those properties have had quite a few hotel flag changes in recent years. Seems they need to raise their branding or management game.
