One small step for retail, but one giant leap for West Loop: By the 30th of this month, Mariano's, and of course Target, will be open and will have joined Dominick's as major local elements of a growing, self-contained, walkable neighborhood.

A vacant building at the SW corner of Chicago and Wood st has just been demolished. Nothing of any historical value.

With this and that other site a few blocks to the west (the Fifield project), it looks as if this part of town is getting poised for another round of investment. Good to see...

It's good to be rid of that old eyesore medical building at Chicago & Wood. ^
Walgreen's with a drive-thru had expressed interest in that site but with the pedestrian designation in place, that is unlikely.

Just want to clarify that the Fifield site is not a few blocks to the west, but pretty much right across the street from this site -- 1801 Chicago and 1822-50 Chicago. I only point it out because this particular block may look VERY different in a few years time.

There's also work going on a bit east at a beautiful old building at 1620 W Chicago. It's in the process of being restored, with a pretty major restaurant space on the ground floor and offices above.

Here are some pics of the Ravenswood hospital demolition. It was a dark and dreary day and I did get rained on.

O wow, they are going with the reddish precast on jones prep. I remember seeing a rendering with it all in white.

I like the idea of putting red there but from the renderings I assumed they would do a nice semi-gloss aluminum. Not sure how I feel about the stained precast...

I think the red itself is a gesture to the brick Printers Row buildings.

It creates a pretty unique transition. This is kinda of what I think chicubs111 was talking about for the red on Amli River North rather than that awful beige paint.

That Mariano's building is also going to have an Eggsperience, GNC, a massage place and Supercuts. Boring stuff but useful for people living nearby I guess.

I remembered hearing about that a while back and wondering if that was actually happening. Exciting news for a town with only one source of culture (the theater). I heard there was going to be a pub put in there in the middle of the downtown, but NIMBYs shot it down.
