It should also be noted that the founder of chuk e cheese... Also the founder of Atari and the first video game "Pong" was a guy named Nolan Bushnell from Utah.. He started out fixing midway games at Lagoon.. Then moved to california and started Atari :-)

I was thinking Jungle Jim's, but apparently that still exists.

It was billy Bob's... I can almost promise you. It was called Billy Bob's showbiz pizza place... Most people just called it Billy Bobs.. That's why showbiz doesn't sound right... At first some of them became chuck e cheese... The animatronics were retrofitted.. We had both chuck e cheese and billy Bob's for a while.

Sooner or later, we'll either have to radically renovate the arena or plan on constructing a new one to placate the NBA, which loves 'em some luxury boxes (and the ESA only has a solid floor of 'em, nothing near the level of current NBA arenas).

My guess is that we'll renovate before constructing a new one because the ESA is still in fairly good shape. But the renovation should also include bringing part of the arena up to the street. I hate how it sits back in a plaza doesn't interact with the street at all.

In Phoenix, at US Airways Center, which opened the same year as the ESA, they made some heavy renovations that I'd love here:

A nice plaza, but you can see they brought some of the arena up to the street. Imagine the ESA fronting 300 West like that - with a huge enclosed concourse with new restaurants and bars (that could be open at night, even when a game isn't happening).

So, I'd like to see something like this (and ignore the shoddiness, you get the idea):

Granted, you'd have to move the Stockton & Malone statues, though move 'em to the area off North Temple, which could act as a true entrance to the arena. Then build a new jumbotron that is actually at the level of a NBA team.

But I'm not going to lie, I hate the ESA. I love the interior, the way the fans are on top of the court, but the exterior is absolutely ugly. It's always been ugly. It's cold, boxy and doesn't interact at all with the area.

I'm jealous of the arena they built in Orlando (replacing their old arena, which was not much older than the ESA):

But the Miller Family can do renovations that changes much of the boxy shape and allows for it to feel like, you know, a basketball arena and not some suburban office building.

Either, or both of these, could be the "House that Shaq built"

Actually, a lot of people including myself feel the ESA is one of the more attractive arenas in the NBA. IMO, It doesn't even remotely resemble an office building in suburbia. I do agree though that it should take on some street engagement as was accomplished with Phoenix.

Maybe it's just the pic, but I think the ESA is much more attractive than Orlandos. That pic seems like it's something very dated to the 80's. The ESA is still timeless, and will be for a lot longer.

It's really depressing to see photos like that and then come to the realization of how bland this city has become since that time

I like modern buildings...but I don't know, there's something about those gritty 50s and 60s era cities. They felt more alive and real - not manufactured and fake.

Love the pics. Just wanted to clarify if you meant those top five pictures were on State, or if you were just referring to the first picture?

Just the first. I thought you'd all be smart enough to tell the rest were from other areas of downtown.

Salt Lake City panoramic photos

from Library of Congress collection of panoramic photos. You may need to right scroll to see all of images. Noticeable skyline gain between 1908 and 1913.
