Haha, I went to Ikea to buy bedding and was wondering why I was nearly the only customer there. Salesperson clued me in so I hurried home. Experienced a couple nasty storms in Tokyo last month, but not like that.

I pay nearly $400 CAD per month now, although my room is about 50 square feet. I'm gonna try to wangle my way into student accommodation, which I think is very affordable compared to Canada.

Agreed! Not sure I could live here indefinitely though. Many aspects of the city make me look forward to returning to Halifax.

Hong Kong has the population and income to support publicly-funded palaces. Halifax, not so much.

Having said that, that is one seriously ugly building.

I was wondering if there was any provision in the new Library design to allow for ground level retail. The Spring Garden Road area is getting maxed out on where stores can go. This site, along with the Sister sites, is one of the last sites for this!

Just curious, I haven't seen what is going to happen to the site next to the new Library. Nothing has been mentioned about this site. What are the plans for this, has anything been proposed for this site? If so, can someone start a new thread on that site!

There won't be any real retail spaces in the library. I think there might be a coffee shop but that's about it.

It was a bit disappointing that no retail was seriously considered for this site, but there will be opportunities for major retail space along Queen Street and Dresden Row. There's also going to be a redevelopment of the block with the former TD building and presumably that will include some larger retail spaces than what currently exists. Retail could also go in at the corner of Grafton and Spring Garden in the St. Mary's redevelopment.

I have a terrible feeling that some people in Halifax would praise that hideous HK design if it were taken down to 4 floors and all the glass were removed. A lot of people love (or think they love) the neoclassical stuff, even if it's reproduced in precast, foam, and/or vinyl (they may not even be aware of the different materials). This is why I think that public consultation is of pretty limited use if people are left unguided and are just asked how they want something to look. In the good public consultation sessions the planners and architects "prime" the audience a bit with some different designs, explain what is good or bad about them, and then ask carefully crafted questions. The eventual design is informed by the feedback, not contorted to fit commands from whoever showed up to the sessions.

Personally I would like to see retail spread out from spring garden along side streets, south park toward fenwick, west up spring garden and back to barington then focus directly on SGR again with new development and aesthetic upgrades... imo

Thanks for the photos - to everyone. For someone like myself, who thought he could make it back for Tall Ships but then got stuck out west - these have been great. I probably won't make it back until Christmas at this rate but I'm excited to see it.

The public art (what I've learned...) - that's great. I love that. What a great way to get people involved in the construction but without creating a lot of problems and costing very little.
