Besides, uptown sounds more swanky, and I was there last night, Sunday night, and south Cumberland was lined with decent looking cars (new models, and even a Cadillac!) and lots of people were walking around the area without begging for change or smokes.

Certainly, you can't refer to that as "downtown".

I've lived in New Brunswick for 21 years (i'm 21 lol) and I've been to London England, Paris France and Barcelona Spain as well as Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and all the cities in the Maritimes BUT Halifax! I will get there as God is my witness! Hahaha

You should definitely plan a day trip to Halifax

Downtown Halifax (including Dartmouth's side of the harbour) is going through some exciting changes as of late. The shipbuilding contract will push even more proposals into development. Some of Halifax's larger towers are getting renovated as well.

Visit soon, if you want to see the downtown in its older state. In as little as a few years, the area will look very different.

That angle of Surrey definitely doesn't show the density. A better angle for a photo would be from the intersection of Lougheed and Blue Mountain. I hope to get a photo uploaded soon

I love the downtown our city has and i cant wait till we see some new buildings crack the skyline.

What's the retail situation in downtown Regina? Is there a good mix of shops and restaurants and clubs? I can see there is a good amount of office space, but I'm not sure about how busy it is in the day and at night.

Retail in Regina in general seems to be pretty busy. Street life downtown still tends to be busy during the day, understandably quieter at night, but esp. during winter time, the Cornwall Centre shopping mall is easily more busy! Nightlife downtown will be concentrated in certain spots, esp. by the bar/pub O'Hanlon's (Victoria Ave. and Scarth St.), further north at the Globe Theatre (Scarth St. and 11th Ave.) and Casino Regina on Saskatchewan Dr., and even more north by the club/bar strip along Dewdney Ave., tending to be more busy closer to the end of the week/weekends!

As for shops/restaurants, there's a variety of retail and services (other than the mall) of hair, spas, fashions, books, travel, health/legal professional, Gov. Canada services, etc., and a healthy mix of ethnic (Chinese, Japanese/sushi, Korean Vietnamese, Ethiopian) and contemporary and fine dining restaurants and coffee shops (no Starbucks downtown though! -- We're probably the only one-(true) Starbucks city around!). I think it would make a nice addition if we could get a Cactus Club or Milestones or other contemporary name restaurant somewhere downtown. There's also a plethora of hotels -- along with their restaurants/boutiques -- with a new one (Capital Pointe Condos/Hilton Hotel) intended to be built and running before the Grey Cup arrives for 2013!

Our newly (almost) completed City Square Plaza (located on the north side of Victoria Park, downtown) should help re-invigorate summertime, weekend events, like the already popular Regina Folk Fest and Farmers' Market, and create interest for other special events to take place there!
